Grant Description

The Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) offers Seed Grants for early-stage reporting that may develop into comprehensive investigative projects. These grants are designed to support journalists during the crucial beginning phases of story development, covering costs such as public records requests, initial travel to gather information, and limited compensation for reporting time. FIJ's broader mission is to strengthen investigative journalism that uncovers hidden wrongdoing and holds powerful institutions accountable, and seed funding plays a vital role in building stories that meet these goals. The Seed Grants program provides funding between $1,000 and $2,500. The entire amount is paid upfront, ensuring journalists have immediate resources to pursue foundational reporting activities. These grants are intended for journalists who have promising leads or early evidence but require further fact-finding to shape a full investigative proposal. Importantly, recipients of seed grants are encouraged to apply for FIJ’s Regular Grants—up to $10,000—for further development and completion of their investigations once they secure a media outlet’s commitment to publish or broadcast the final piece. To be eligible, applicants must be freelance journalists or individuals not in full-time staff roles at a media outlet. The proposed stories must contain a strong U.S. focus and meet FIJ's definition of investigative journalism: exposing previously unknown or hidden wrongdoing, identifying accountability, and seeking systemic change. The Fund emphasizes that while journalist time may be a budget item, it should not be the sole expense listed. Applicants must demonstrate the investigative potential of their work and the necessity of early-stage funding to advance the reporting process. Applications must include a one-paragraph summary of the preliminary reporting project, a longer narrative about the broader story and investigative rationale, and a detailed budget estimate. The budget should justify all expenses, including trips (with breakdowns for airfare, lodging, and mileage), document fees, and time spent reporting, supported by the applicant’s hourly rate. Additional materials include a resume, two relevant work samples, and an optional recommendation letter from a mentor, professor, or editor. FIJ maintains strict confidentiality for all applications. Submissions are reviewed solely by FIJ staff and board members and are not shared externally. Applicants are advised that proposals previously declined may not be resubmitted unless explicitly invited to do so. Similarly, multiple submissions within the same cycle are not allowed without express permission. The application deadline for Spring 2026 Seed Grants is Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 9:30 AM Eastern Time. Journalists seeking clarification or assistance are encouraged to reach out to FIJ staff via grants@fij.org.
