Bronx Cultural Visions Fund

The Bronx Cultural Visions Fund is a project based grant program administered by the Bronx Council on the Arts and supported by the Howard Gilman Foundation. The program was created to strengthen the live performing arts scene in The Bronx by supporting the development of new concepts and the production of new work. Eligible artistic disciplines include theater, music, dance, multidisciplinary performance, and other work intended to happen live in front of an audience. The program focuses on Bronx based emerging and mid career performing artists, performance collectives, and nonprofit performing arts organizations. Bronx Council on the Arts intends the awards to make a meaningful impact on an individual artist's career or an organization's development and to establish long term relationships with grantees. The fund provides two primary types of project support. Concept Development Grants provide up to $10,000 for live performance ideas or projects in their earliest stages and may support playwrights, directors, choreographers, performers, collectives, and small organizations developing their own concepts. Production Grants provide up to $20,000 for the realization of a new project and are intended for applicants ready to produce a live performance of new work. Production performances must take place in New York City but are not required to take place in The Bronx. At least five Concept Development Grants and five Production Grants will be awarded during the cycle. Grantees are also eligible for up to $2,500 in Professional Development support for skill building or capacity strengthening activities such as consultancies, classes, or the purchase of critical equipment or software. Grantees must participate in at least three BCVF cohort meetings during the one year grant period. Eligible applicants include Bronx based individual performing artists, ensembles, collectives, and nonprofit performing arts organizations. Individuals and the lead members of ensembles or collectives must be Bronx County residents, all ensemble members must be at least 18 years old, and applicants must identify as emerging or mid career performing arts practitioners. Applicants must be conceiving, generating, developing, or producing the proposed work themselves. Organizations must have been incorporated as nonprofits for at least one year, have a most recent annual budget of $250,000 or less, maintain a Bronx mailing address, and be the entity developing or producing the performance. Applicants must provide acceptable proof of Bronx residency or incorporation matching the application address. Current grantees of the Howard Gilman Foundation are not eligible, and BCVF does not support curators, festival organizers, or presenters. Applications use a two stage process. The first stage is a Letter of Intent submitted through Submittable in either written or video format. The LOI should introduce the applicant and project and address biographical information, the applicant's history and accomplishments, the project's general timeline and goals, and the expected impact of BCVF support on the applicant's career or organizational development. Written statements may not exceed 500 words. Video statements may not exceed three minutes and may be uploaded directly through Submittable. Spanish video submissions are accepted when English subtitles or a translation are provided. Applicants must also provide a sample of previous work through website links, writing samples, or video clips of no more than five minutes, along with applicable proof of eligibility. After Bronx Council on the Arts staff screens LOIs for eligibility, submissions are reviewed by staff and an invited panel of performing arts professionals. Reviewers consider whether a project stewards cultural heritage, innovates, shares a new perspective, probes or pushes boundaries, or demonstrates a compelling vision or original voice. They also consider technical expertise or proficiency demonstrated in work samples, whether proposed outcomes are achievable and plans realistic, and whether the project represents a new direction or growth for the applicant. Selected applicants are invited to the second stage, a full proposal containing additional project and project budget questions, a resume or CV, and additional work samples. Full proposals are reviewed by a specially convened panel of performing arts professionals. The 2027 cycle accepts Letters of Intent from July 2 through August 27, 2026, with the LOI deadline at 11:59 PM on August 27. Information sessions occur during July and August, and the LOI review panel takes place in September. Invited applicants may submit full proposals from September 28 through October 23, 2026. The full proposal panel meets in November, award notifications are scheduled for December, and payments are processed in January 2027 for projects beginning January 1, 2027. The grant period is one year. The guidelines also indicate that grant types cannot be awarded for two years in a row: a Concept Development grantee applying the following year must apply for Production, while a Production grantee applying the following year must apply for Concept Development.
