Grant Description

The Autism Research Program Idea Development Award is administered by the Defense Health Agency through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs. The program was established to support high-impact research that advances understanding and improves outcomes for individuals with autism and their families. Since its inception in 2007, the program has funded numerous projects with a focus on innovative and scientifically rigorous approaches. The current funding opportunity continues this mission by prioritizing research that addresses critical needs within the autism community and contributes to meaningful scientific and clinical advancements. The primary purpose of this award is to support innovative, high-risk, high-reward research that has the potential to lead to significant discoveries or breakthroughs in autism research. Projects are expected to generate impactful data and open new avenues of investigation. Applicants are encouraged to align their proposals with specific areas of interest identified by the program, such as improving diagnosis and access to services, understanding environmental risk factors, developing provider tools, and enhancing quality of life outcomes. Projects that do not align directly with these areas must provide strong justification demonstrating their relevance to critical autism-related challenges. Funding for this opportunity is structured to support approximately three awards, each with a total cost cap of 750000 dollars over a maximum performance period of three years. The total program funding is approximately 2.25 million dollars. Funds may be used for research-related expenses, including personnel, supplies, and limited travel for collaboration and dissemination. However, clinical trials are explicitly prohibited under this mechanism. Applicants must also adhere to strict budget guidelines, including restrictions on travel and inclusion of all direct and indirect costs within the total budget cap. Eligibility for the program is broad, encompassing both domestic and international organizations, including for-profit and nonprofit entities, as well as public and private institutions. Principal Investigators must be independent researchers at or above the level of Assistant Professor or equivalent. The program also allows for a partnering PI option, where two investigators collaborate on a single project, each receiving a separate award. This structure is intended to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and enhance the potential impact of the research. The application process is conducted in two stages. The first stage requires submission of a pre-application through the eBRAP system, including a concise narrative outlining the research idea, impact, innovation, and team qualifications. Only applicants who are invited after this stage may proceed to submit a full application. The full application includes a comprehensive project narrative, technical and lay abstracts, detailed budget, supporting documentation, and multiple required attachments such as statements of work and impact statements. Submissions must comply with formatting and content requirements outlined in the program announcement. Applications are evaluated through a rigorous two-tier review process consisting of peer review and programmatic review. Peer review assesses scientific merit, innovation, impact, and team qualifications, while programmatic review considers alignment with program priorities and overall portfolio balance. Additional evaluation factors include the robustness of the study design, statistical analysis plan, and feasibility. The program emphasizes the importance of innovation and impact, but these do not compensate for weaknesses in scientific rigor. Key deadlines for this funding opportunity include a pre-application submission deadline of July 27, 2026, and a full application deadline of October 22, 2026. Invitations to submit full applications are expected by late August 2026, with peer review occurring in December 2026 and programmatic review in February 2027. Awards are anticipated to be made by September 30, 2027. Applicants are encouraged to ensure all registrations and submission requirements are completed well in advance of deadlines to avoid disqualification.
