The Dub and Murray Martin Cherokee and Clay County Trust was established in 1973 by W.J. “Dub” Martin of Cherokee County, North Carolina. His vision was to enhance the quality of life for residents of Cherokee and Clay Counties through targeted philanthropic support. The Trust is administered by Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., and upholds a mission to improve the well-being of individuals living in these two counties.
The Trust makes annual grant awards to support nonprofit organizations operating primarily within Cherokee and Clay Counties, North Carolina. Eligible applicants must be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and must be primarily located or carry out their projects in the designated counties. Funding is focused on a set of defined program areas including arts, education, health, human services, public benefit, and religion. The Trust intentionally excludes federal or state-supported organizations and large national charities that receive significant public fundraising.
The foundation gives preference to projects aimed at educational advancement for youth and gifted students, the care and support of individuals in need or those affected by illness, victims of domestic violence, and the operational support of churches, retirement homes, and children’s homes. While individuals cannot apply directly, the Trust encourages nonprofit organizations that serve local residents with these needs to apply.
Grants typically range from $1,000 to $5,000, with the total annual funding averaging $35,000 across approximately 15 grantees. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. However, to be considered at the annual grant review meeting held in May, applicants must submit their completed applications by April 15. Confirmation of application receipt is provided, and funding decisions are generally communicated by June. Periodic progress and final reports may be required from funded organizations.
The grant program does not allow funds to be used for political activities, loans, or fundraising events, including benefits and athletic events. Grantmaking strictly follows the Trust’s geographic and organizational focus. All grant communications, including questions about eligibility and submission, are managed by Wells Fargo’s grant administration team, who can be reached by email or phone.
