Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratory (P30 Clinical Trial Optional)

The Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratory (AITC) program, administered by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is designed to support the development and application of AI and technology approaches in aging research, including Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias (AD/ADRD). This opportunity invites applications under the P30 Center Core Grant mechanism to establish Collaboratories that will serve as national resources fostering innovation and research training. It is a reissue of RFA-AG-21-009 and part of a broader initiative that includes a coordinating center funded separately. Applicants are expected to design centers that include at minimum an Administrative Core and a Research Innovation Core, with the option to propose an additional Investigator-Initiated Core. The AITC will facilitate annual national competitions for research project awards, aiming to fund both general aging and AD/ADRD-focused studies. At least 80% of research project funding must support AD/ADRD research. The Collaboratories will also be required to coordinate with the AITC Coordinating Center on stakeholder engagement, data sharing, symposium planning, and program evaluation using common metrics. Eligible applicants include a wide array of organizations, such as public and private institutions of higher education, nonprofit entities, government agencies, and for-profit companies. However, NIH policy prohibits funding awards involving foreign subawards under this NOFO. Collaboratory Directors must demonstrate technical expertise in fields such as computer science or computational biology, and teams should be interdisciplinary, involving professionals from geriatrics, neurology, and related areas. Applications must follow the NIH’s “How to Apply” guide, specifically the Multi-Project (M) instructions. There is no pre-application requirement such as a Letter of Intent. The application open date is September 15, 2025, with a final deadline of October 15, 2025. Awards are expected to begin as early as July 2026, following review and council meetings in spring 2026. The maximum funding per award is $4.9 million per year in total costs, for a period of up to five years. Applicants must ensure their registration with SAM.gov, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov is complete before applying. Collaboratories will need to manage a variety of responsibilities, including hosting research competitions, implementing centralized IRB processes, supporting data sharing and transparency, and engaging with stakeholder communities. The program encourages projects that address challenges in algorithmic fairness, accessibility, and ethical technology implementation. The AITC program will be regularly evaluated by the NIA, with each Collaboratory required to contribute data on performance metrics.
