Independent Projects Grant
This program provides $10,000 in funding to New York State-based individuals and teams in design fields to support innovative independent projects that engage the public and explore the future of design.
The Independent Projects grant program is a collaborative initiative between the New York State Council on the Arts and The Architectural League of New York. Established as an artist support program focused on design disciplines, it provides funding to individuals and teams to pursue independent creative or research-based design work. The program reflects a broader commitment by both organizations to advance design as a critical art form that enhances quality of life and contributes to addressing contemporary challenges. The purpose of the program is to support projects that explore the question of where design can go next. Applicants are expected to center design in their work, whether through prototyping, theoretical inquiry, historical research, or community-based practices. Projects must demonstrate originality, creativity, and the potential to contribute meaningfully to their respective disciplines. A key requirement is that outcomes be accessible to the public, ensuring that funded work extends beyond the individual practitioner and contributes to broader discourse and engagement. Funding for the program consists of fixed awards of ten thousand dollars granted to selected applicants. A total of twenty five awards will be distributed in the current cycle. Funds may be used to compensate project leads or team members for their time, as well as to cover related project expenses such as materials and in-state travel. However, restrictions apply: funding cannot support work tied to academic coursework, institutional responsibilities, commissioned projects, recreational activities, or travel outside New York State. Additional funding from other sources is permitted as long as eligibility conditions remain intact. Eligibility is limited to individuals or teams based in New York State who are actively engaged in design fields such as architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, and related disciplines. Organizations and institutions are not eligible to apply. Applicants must demonstrate independence in their work and cannot be current recipients of the same grant or recent employees of the administering organizations. Proof of residency is required upon selection, with documentation verifying that all team members reside in New York State throughout the award period. The application process is conducted through an online platform where applicants must create an account and submit required materials. These include a certification of eligibility, a concise design impact statement, and a detailed project narrative addressing multiple prompts such as project overview, context, team qualifications, activities, budget, and audience accessibility. Supporting materials such as resumes and visual or audio documentation are also required. Projects requiring external permissions must include additional documentation. Applications are reviewed first for eligibility and then evaluated by a panel of design experts using criteria that assess creativity, feasibility, impact, and accessibility. Proposals are scored and discussed in multiple rounds, with final selections based on panel consensus. The timeline begins with the opening of the application portal in mid June and concludes with a submission deadline in late July. Applicants are notified of results in September, with the award period running from early October through the end of the following September. The program operates on an annual cycle, with each round inviting new proposals aligned with its central design question.
