Grant Description

The Turnout is the annual grantmaking initiative administered by the Galesburg Community Foundation, a community-based philanthropic organization dedicated to strengthening local nonprofits and improving quality of life across Knox, Warren, and Henderson Counties. The initiative is designed to engage donors, community stakeholders, and nonprofit organizations in a collaborative funding process that fosters a culture of giving while supporting impactful local programs. Funding for The Turnout is derived from the Foundation’s Community Impact Fund, which consists of unrestricted donations from community members and contributions from donor advised funds held at the Foundation. The primary purpose of The Turnout is to support nonprofit organizations and public-serving entities in implementing projects and programs that generate measurable community impact. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, public charities, schools, churches, and government agencies that serve residents within the specified three-county region. The program funds a variety of project types, including education and workforce development initiatives, health and human services, community enhancement and arts programming, and nonprofit capacity-building efforts. However, capital projects such as construction, vehicles, or infrastructure purchases are explicitly excluded from eligibility. The application process is structured and time-bound, opening annually on July 1 and closing on July 15. Applicants are required to submit detailed information about their organization, including mission, leadership structure, and proposed project. Applications must also include a clear description of project objectives, a defined budget, and expected outcomes with measurable indicators of success. Prior to submission, all applicants are required to meet with the Vice President of Programs to discuss their proposal, identify potential gaps, and ensure readiness for submission. Only one application per organization is permitted per cycle. Once submitted, applications undergo a formal review process conducted by the Community Foundation Grants Committee. Proposals are evaluated based on criteria such as community impact, organizational capacity, feasibility of implementation, and alignment with funding priorities. Recommendations from the committee are then presented to the Board of Directors for final approval. The evaluation process also incorporates input from donors, particularly those with donor advised funds, who are given visibility into applications and may support projects aligned with their interests. Organizations are notified of funding decisions in late August, with grant awards distributed in early September. A defining feature of The Turnout is that awarded projects receive full funding for the amount requested, with no partial awards issued. Funded projects are expected to be carried out between the time of award and May of the following year. Grantees are required to submit a follow-up report within 30 days after funds are fully expended to ensure accountability, transparency, and documentation of outcomes. The Turnout operates as a recurring annual funding opportunity, reinforcing consistent support for community-based initiatives. The structured timeline, mandatory pre-application engagement, and comprehensive evaluation process collectively ensure that funded projects are well-developed and capable of delivering meaningful impact. For additional information, applicants may contact the Foundation directly via phone or email, or schedule a consultation with program leadership prior to applying.
