Truckee River Fund
This funding opportunity supports nonprofit organizations and government entities in projects that protect and improve the water quality and resources of the Truckee River and its watershed.
The Truckee River Fund, administered by the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada in partnership with the Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA), offers grants to support projects that aim to protect and enhance the water quality and resources of the Truckee River and its watershed. The fund exemplifies a collaborative approach to environmental stewardship, leveraging local expertise and community engagement to achieve measurable improvements in the regional water ecosystem. Grants are awarded through a competitive proposal process, with funding decisions made by the Truckee River Fund Advisory Committee and subject to approval by both TMWA's Board and the Community Foundation's Board of Trustees. The fund’s mission centers on mitigating threats to the water quality of the Truckee River system. Applicants must align their project goals with this mission and demonstrate significant, measurable impacts. The fund prioritizes projects that provide clear benefits to TMWA customers and mitigate threats to water quality, especially upstream or near water treatment and hydroelectric plant intakes. Preferred project types include aquatic invasive species management, watershed and stormwater improvements, reforestation, local creek and tributary rehabilitation, and educational programs related to watershed protection. Grants typically range from $5,000 to $75,000, and approximately $225,000 is available during the current request for proposals (RFP) cycle. The fund mandates a 25% match of requested funds, which can consist of cash or in-kind contributions; however, for projects located downstream of the Vista USGS gage, the match must be entirely in cash. Funding is provided on a reimbursable basis for actual expenditures incurred, and projects must commence within 180 days of award acceptance. Funds must be used solely for charitable purposes and projects with clear public benefit. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, nonprofit educational institutions, and governmental entities. All applicants must submit a completed application, including a required budget template, through the Community Foundation’s online grant management system. To be considered for funding, submissions must be confirmed as received by the deadline: January 30, 2026, at noon. Proposals are evaluated based on their alignment with TRF priorities, quality and sustainability of project design, public benefit, measurability of outcomes, organizational capacity, and appropriateness of the budget. Additional considerations include the extent to which the project incorporates existing assessments and whether it supports long-term maintenance or collaboration with partner organizations. The Truckee River Watershed Council and The Nature Conservancy assessments may also influence funding decisions. For questions or assistance, applicants are advised to contact Lauren Sgandurra at the Community Foundation via laurens@nevadafund.org. Full program details and examples of previously funded projects are available at www.truckeeriverfund.org. Recurring RFP cycles occur each January and June, and this biannual schedule allows applicants to plan for future funding opportunities.
