Artist Support Grant

The Artist Support Grant is administered by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, and delivered regionally through designated partners. In Region 17, the program is led by ArtsAVL and serves artists residing in Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Polk, Rutherford, and Transylvania counties. Up to 50 percent of the awarded funds may be allocated toward artist fees. The program explicitly excludes funding for undergraduate or graduate education scholarships, political advocacy projects, religiously exclusive programming, nonprofit organizational initiatives, and projects that do not directly benefit the applicant’s artistic growth. Eligibility requirements are specific and include both individual artists and small collaborative groups. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside continuously within the designated region for at least one year prior to the application deadline, and be either United States citizens or permanent residents. All members of a collaborative team must meet these criteria. Full time undergraduate or associate degree students are not eligible, although some exceptions apply to certificate or unrelated graduate programs. Additional restrictions apply to prior awardees and individuals affiliated with the administering organizations to prevent conflicts of interest. The application process requires submission of several components including a project description, artist statement, resume, budget, and work samples completed within the past three years. Work samples must adhere to discipline specific guidelines and demonstrate artistic quality and relevance. Applicants may also submit optional letters of recommendation and supporting materials.
