Southern Monterey County Foundation Grant

The Southern Monterey County Foundation is an affiliate fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County, established in 2014 to strengthen communities throughout Southern Monterey County. Its mission centers on inspiring philanthropy and directing financial resources toward high priority needs in the region, specifically defined as King City and all areas south of it, excluding coastal communities. Through its annual grantmaking process, the foundation leverages donor contributions to support organizations that provide meaningful services and measurable community impact. This grant program is designed to fund nonprofit organizations and eligible public-serving entities that demonstrate the leadership and operational capacity to deliver programs benefiting local residents. The foundation prioritizes initiatives that address critical community needs, particularly in the areas of health and wellness as well as education and youth development. Health related projects may include nutrition programs, mental health services, physical activity initiatives, and efforts that enhance emotional wellbeing. Education focused proposals may include PreK through 12 academic enrichment, youth leadership development, career exploration, financial literacy, and out of school learning opportunities such as literacy and arts programming. Funding is intended to support a wide range of programmatic and operational costs directly tied to project delivery. Allowable uses include program development expenses, personnel costs aligned with program goals, equipment and materials that benefit participants, and facility related expenses such as pre development or renovation costs. The program may also support matching grants designed to leverage additional funding. However, funds cannot be used for political or partisan activities, religious programming that promotes doctrine, individual financial assistance, scholarships, debt repayment, fundraising events, or expenses incurred prior to the award date. These restrictions ensure that funding remains focused on community benefit and programmatic impact. Eligibility for the grant is broad but clearly defined. Applicants may include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, public entities such as schools and parks, and faith based organizations provided their activities serve a broader community beyond their membership. Organizations that are not legally incorporated may still apply if they partner with a qualified fiscal sponsor that is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) entity responsible for financial oversight. Each organization may submit only one application per cycle, although an organization serving as a fiscal sponsor may also submit its own application separately. The application process requires submission through the Community Foundation for Monterey County’s grant system by the stated deadline. Applicants are expected to present a clear proposal demonstrating community need, organizational capacity, and a viable plan for achieving outcomes. The SMCF Advisory Council reviews applications and makes funding recommendations to the Community Foundation board, which holds final decision making authority. Evaluation criteria emphasize community support, feasibility, and the potential for measurable results. The 2026 grant cycle opens in June 2026, with proposals due by August 7, 2026 at 11:59 PM. Funding decisions are expected to be announced in October 2026. Within twelve months of receiving funding, grantees must submit a written evaluation detailing outcomes and use of funds. This requirement ensures accountability and helps inform future funding decisions. The grant program operates on an annual cycle, reflecting the foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting community driven initiatives in Southern Monterey County.
