Arts in Rural Places Grants

The Arts in Rural Places Grant is administered by South Arts, a regional nonprofit arts organization serving a nine-state area in the southeastern United States. Supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and other funding partners, South Arts works to advance the arts through grants, programs, and services that enhance the cultural vitality of the region. This particular program is designed to address disparities in access to arts programming by focusing on rural, isolated, and small communities that may lack sufficient cultural infrastructure or resources. The purpose of the Arts in Rural Places Grant is to provide financial support for community engagement projects that bring high-quality arts experiences to underserved areas. These expedited grants, offered on a first-come, first-served basis, provide up to 3000 dollars in funding specifically for artist fees. The program prioritizes projects that engage Southern artists and expand access to arts programming in communities that are geographically or socioeconomically isolated, or that have populations of 50000 or fewer residents. Funding is strictly designated for artist fee support and may be used to engage a range of artistic disciplines, including film, traditional arts, visual arts, performing arts, and literary arts. Eligible activities must include at least two public-facing engagements: one public presentation such as a performance, screening, or exhibition, and one educational or community engagement component such as a workshop or lecture. The grant requires a dollar-for-dollar cash match, meaning applicants must secure matching funds equal to the amount requested. Eligible applicants include tax-exempt nonprofit organizations and official units of local, county, or state government located within South Arts nine-state service region, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Applicants must be based in qualifying rural or small communities and must engage a professional artist residing within the same regional footprint. Additional requirements include obtaining a Unique Entity Identifier and meeting all program guidelines. Applications are submitted through South Arts online grants management system and must include several required components, such as a completed application form, proof of nonprofit or government status if applicable, a signed agreement or letter of intent with the artist, artist support materials, and a work sample. Optional supplemental materials may also be submitted. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the program director in advance to confirm eligibility and clarify requirements. The application period opens on April 15, 2026 and operates on a rolling basis, with submissions required at least 60 days prior to the proposed project start date. Applicants are notified of funding decisions within four weeks of submission. Funded projects must take place between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027. As funding is contingent on availability, applicants should be aware that awards are not guaranteed and unspent funds may need to be returned if the program is discontinued.
