The Projects, Events, or Festivals (PEF) grant program is administered by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH) and is designed to foster progress in the arts and humanities throughout the District of Columbia. It supports individual artists, nonprofit organizations, and service entities that promote arts, arts education, and humanities-based programming. The initiative aims to affirm Washington, DC’s identity as a world-class cultural capital while enriching the lives of residents and enhancing community vibrancy.
The program is open to a broad range of projects regardless of size, provided they demonstrate clear impact within the District. Eligible projects may include concerts, art exhibitions, readings, and festivals featuring diverse disciplines such as dance, music, theater, folk art, film, and more. Emphasis is placed on community-based efforts that reflect shared location, interests, or social impact, aligning with CAH’s commitment to inclusive cultural development.
The PEF program is highly focused on improving quality of life through arts and humanities engagement. Applicants are encouraged to design experiences that are accessible, culturally meaningful, and rooted in local needs. Projects must actively engage District residents and/or visitors and are expected to demonstrate alignment with CAH’s goals of cultural access and creative economic growth.
The grant is open to individuals and nonprofit entities based in the District. The program supports both arts and humanities efforts and values proposals that exhibit artistic excellence, feasibility, and community relevance. Applicants unsure of their project’s eligibility are encouraged to consult a CAH grants manager for clarification.
For the FY 2026 cycle, the application deadline was April 22, 2025. The application window is now closed. CAH has stated that the Request for Applications (RFA) for FY 2027 will be released in 2026. Additional guidance and support are available during standard office hours at CAH's headquarters or via email and phone. The program is offered on an annual basis, and the next cycle is expected to open in Spring 2026.
Strong proposals should highlight cultural contribution to DC and community-based engagement.
