Grant Description

The Equipment Grants Program (EGP) is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. This federal funding opportunity is designed to strengthen research infrastructure at institutions of higher education by supporting the acquisition of special purpose scientific equipment used in food and agricultural sciences. The program operates under statutory authority that enables competitive grants for research equipment that enhances scientific capability and contributes to national agricultural priorities. The program aligns with broader USDA goals such as improving agricultural productivity, advancing food systems, supporting innovation, and training future agricultural professionals. The primary purpose of the program is to increase access to shared-use research instrumentation that supports both fundamental and applied research. The grant specifically funds the acquisition of a single, well-integrated piece of equipment or instrument that may consist of multiple components necessary for a unified research function. These instruments must directly support research, research training, or extension activities and must be shared among multiple users within or beyond the applicant institution. The program emphasizes expanding institutional research capacity and enabling multidisciplinary collaboration, rather than funding individual research projects. Funding is strictly limited to equipment acquisition and certain associated costs. Allowable expenses include the purchase of the equipment, installation (excluding facility construction or modification), limited warranty coverage, and one-time training related to equipment use. However, the program explicitly prohibits funding for personnel salaries, research project costs, consumable supplies, facility construction or renovation, and general-purpose equipment. Maintenance contracts beyond the initial warranty period are also not allowed. Institutions must demonstrate a clear plan for long-term operation and maintenance of the equipment beyond the grant period. Eligible applicants include accredited public or nonprofit institutions of higher education and associated research entities, including land-grant institutions, state agricultural experiment stations, cooperative extension services, and certain specialized institutions such as veterinary schools. Applicants must meet strict eligibility and submission requirements, including limits on the number of applications and awards per institution. Each institution may submit up to two applications as a lead entity, but only one award may be granted per institution within the funding cycle. Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov and require completion of multiple federal registration systems including SAM, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov. The application includes a detailed project narrative limited to ten pages, describing the equipment, its research applications, institutional capacity, and long-term sustainability. Additional required components include budget documentation, equipment quotes, management plans, and supporting institutional documentation. Applications are evaluated through a two-stage process consisting of administrative screening followed by peer review. Evaluation criteria focus on four equally weighted areas: the innovativeness of the proposed approach, the potential impact on research capacity, institutional capability to manage and utilize the equipment, and the cost-effectiveness of the proposed budget. Review panels include experts from scientific, agricultural, and stakeholder communities to ensure relevance and impact. Successful proposals must clearly demonstrate how the equipment will enhance research capabilities and contribute to agricultural science priorities. The application deadline for the current funding cycle is June 26, 2026, with submissions due by 5:00 PM Eastern Time. No letter of intent is required. Projects funded under this program have a duration of 48 months, during which institutions are expected to install, utilize, and demonstrate the impact of the acquired equipment. While the program does not explicitly state recurrence, it is issued as part of annual federal funding cycles, suggesting future opportunities. For inquiries, applicants may contact the program via the official USDA NIFA email channels.
