Grant Description

The Parkinson’s Research Program Early Investigator Research Award is administered by the Defense Health Agency through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs. This program is part of a broader federal effort to support innovative biomedical research that addresses significant health challenges affecting service members, veterans, their families, and the general public. The Parkinson’s Research Program was expanded in recent years to encompass all Parkinson’s disease research, reflecting a strategic commitment to improving prevention, treatment, and quality of life outcomes. The Early Investigator Research Award specifically focuses on cultivating new talent in the field by supporting investigators in the early stages of their careers. The primary purpose of this funding opportunity is to build research capacity in Parkinson’s disease by enabling early-career researchers to pursue high-impact, innovative studies. The program encourages projects that align with one or more designated focus areas, including understanding disease heterogeneity, developing model systems, identifying biomarkers, and advancing interventions that address unmet medical needs. The research must demonstrate relevance to military populations, even if direct inclusion of those populations is not required. The award is structured to foster both scientific advancement and the professional development of investigators, ensuring long-term contributions to the field. Funding is offered under two distinct levels aligned with the applicant’s career stage. Funding Level 1 is intended for postdoctoral or clinical fellows and requires mentorship from an experienced Parkinson’s disease researcher, while Funding Level 2 is designed for early-career independent investigators and does not require a mentor. The maximum total funding is $300,000 for Level 1 and $1,000,000 for Level 2, with a maximum period of performance of two years. Allowable costs include research expenses, limited travel for collaboration and dissemination, and indirect costs in accordance with negotiated rates. Clinical trials are explicitly prohibited, although other forms of clinical research are permitted. Eligibility is broad in terms of organizational participation, including domestic and international institutions, both for-profit and nonprofit, and public or private entities. Principal Investigators must be within ten years of completing their advanced degree or residency training. The program emphasizes inclusivity and does not impose restrictions based on nationality or citizenship. However, applicants must demonstrate strong potential for a career in Parkinson’s disease research and meet all structural requirements, including mentorship for Level 1 applications. The application process consists of two required steps: submission of a pre-application and a full application. The pre-application includes a letter of intent and identification of individuals providing letters of recommendation. Full applications require extensive documentation, including a project narrative, technical and lay abstracts, statement of work, impact statement, eligibility verification, and supporting materials such as letters of support and research plans. Applications must be submitted through designated federal systems, specifically eBRAP for pre-applications and either eBRAP or Grants.gov for full submissions, depending on the applicant organization type. Applications are evaluated through a two-tier review process consisting of peer review and programmatic review. Peer review assesses scientific merit, investigator qualifications, research feasibility, and potential impact, while programmatic review considers alignment with program priorities and portfolio balance. Additional evaluation factors include the research environment, budget appropriateness, and data sharing plans. Successful applicants can expect notification following programmatic review, with awards anticipated to be issued by late 2027. Key deadlines for the current cycle include an October 23, 2026 deadline for the pre-application and a November 6, 2026 deadline for the full application. Peer review is scheduled for January 2027, followed by programmatic review in March 2027. Awards are expected to be finalized by September 30, 2027. The program operates on a recurring annual cycle tied to federal appropriations, and applicants are encouraged to begin preparation early due to the complexity of submission requirements and the need for multiple registrations across federal systems.
