Grant Description

The Annual Community Commitment Grants program is administered by the Community Foundation of East Central Illinois, an organization established in 1972 that has grown its assets significantly to support philanthropic investment across east central Illinois. Through endowed funds contributed by donors, as well as partnerships with other foundations, the organization distributes approximately one million dollars annually to nonprofit organizations. The grant program reflects a strategic commitment to creating sustainable, measurable improvements in the region by funding projects that demonstrate long-term value and responsible use of resources. The purpose of the Annual Community Commitment Grants is to support nonprofit organizations in addressing community challenges and strengthening organizational effectiveness. The Foundation prioritizes proposals that offer practical, solution-oriented approaches to local issues while also enhancing the stability and capacity of the applying organization. Emphasis is placed on projects that demonstrate clear benefits to residents of east central Illinois and align with the mission and goals of the applicant organization. Funding is intended for specific project-based needs, particularly durable, non-disposable items that contribute to long-term program success. Historically, grant awards have ranged between 500 and 7500 dollars. The program explicitly excludes funding for general operating expenses such as staffing, training, or marketing, as well as travel, meals, consultant costs, scholarships, capital campaigns, and financial assistance to individuals. Projects that have already incurred costs, political or sectarian activities, and for-profit ventures are also ineligible for support. Eligibility is limited to organizations that hold an IRS determination letter confirming 501(c)(3) charitable status or comparable nonprofit designation and that serve residents within east central Illinois. While new programs within established organizations are eligible, entirely new agencies are not supported. Collaboration between agencies and across counties is encouraged, as it may enhance the impact and reach of funded initiatives. The application process is conducted annually, with applications becoming available on August 1 and due by 11:59 pm on August 31. Each organization may submit only one application per cycle. Applicants are required to provide detailed and current financial information, including both a project-specific budget and an organizational budget. Proposals should clearly articulate community impact, demonstrate planning and feasibility, and include evidence of stakeholder input and participation. Applications are reviewed by the Foundation’s Grant Distribution Committee and evaluated based on their potential community value, quality of planning and leadership, and alignment with available funding. Final decisions are made by the Board of Trustees, with all applicants notified of outcomes following the November board meeting and prior to November 30. Successful applicants must sign a grant agreement and are required to submit a report or status update by June of the following year documenting the use of funds and progress of the project.
