Cranberry Renovation and Enhancement Program
This program provides financial assistance to cranberry growers in Massachusetts for modernizing and improving their agricultural operations through renovations and targeted enhancements.
The Cranberry Renovation and Enhancement Program is administered by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources under the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. The program is designed to provide financial assistance to cranberry growers in Massachusetts to modernize, improve, and sustain their agricultural operations. It combines two funding tracks into a single streamlined opportunity, allowing applicants to pursue comprehensive renovations of cranberry bogs as well as targeted enhancements to equipment and infrastructure. The overarching goal is to strengthen long term agricultural viability while improving environmental stewardship, water management, and operational efficiency. The program supports two primary project categories. Renovation projects involve full or partial reconstruction of cranberry bogs to improve productivity, drainage, irrigation, and overall design. These projects must result in a fully functional and operational bog and often include activities such as planting new vines, grading land, and installing water management systems. Enhancement projects, by contrast, focus on targeted improvements such as irrigation upgrades, precision agriculture tools, harvesting equipment, and environmental systems that increase efficiency or reduce resource use. Both project types must result in durable, long term improvements directly tied to cranberry production. Funding is provided on a reimbursement basis, meaning applicants must pay for project costs upfront and then seek reimbursement upon completion. Renovation projects are eligible for funding up to twenty five thousand dollars per acre, with a maximum award of one hundred twenty five thousand dollars. Enhancement projects can receive up to eighty percent of total project costs, capped at fifty thousand dollars. Applicants may combine both project types in a single application, with a maximum combined request of one hundred seventy five thousand dollars. A minimum twenty percent applicant contribution is required, with renovation projects allowing certain in kind contributions while enhancement projects require a cash match. Eligibility is limited to commercial cranberry operations located in Massachusetts that meet the definition of agricultural production under state law. Applicants must demonstrate ownership or control of the project site for at least three consecutive years and must ensure that the proposed project is located on actively farmed cranberry bogs greater than one acre. Applicants must also be in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and must have sufficient site control, including lease agreements where applicable. Projects that do not directly support cranberry production or fail to result in measurable improvements are not eligible. The application process requires submission through an online portal and includes several required components. Applicants must prepare a detailed project budget using provided templates, obtain vendor quotes for all expenditures, and assemble supporting documentation such as maps, design plans, and financial verification materials. Additional documentation may include lease agreements, conservation plans, or proof of financing. Applications must be complete at the time of submission, as late or incomplete submissions are not accepted and cannot be modified after the deadline. Applications are evaluated through a structured review process that includes an initial eligibility screening followed by a detailed scoring phase. Evaluation criteria include applicant capacity, project need, feasibility, expected impacts, and overall value relative to program goals. Projects may also require a field visit to verify details and assess readiness. Final funding decisions are made after review by departmental leadership, and award notifications are expected approximately two months after the application deadline. The application period for this funding cycle opened in late June and closes at four pm on August twentieth, two thousand twenty six. Contracts are expected to begin in October of the same year, and all funded projects must be completed and invoiced by June thirtieth, two thousand twenty seven, with no extensions permitted. The program is offered annually, and applicants are encouraged to prepare early by gathering required documentation and ensuring readiness to meet both financial and operational requirements. Program inquiries can be directed to the designated contact at the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources via phone or email.
