HOPE Grant

The Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia administers the HOPE Grant to support nonprofit organizations and government entities engaged in community-serving projects. Established with the intent to foster health, education, workforce development, children and family initiatives, and economic development, the Foundation prioritizes local impact within the counties of Washington, Grayson, Russell, and Smyth in Virginia. The HOPE Grant is specifically structured to provide one-time financial support of up to $50,000 for eligible projects that align with the Foundation's mission and demonstrate clear, measurable community benefits. HOPE Grant applications are accepted twice annually, with deadlines at the end of June and December. The current cycle is open and will close on December 31, 2025, at 4:30 PM Eastern Time. Applicants are first required to complete a qualification survey. Upon passing, they gain access to the full application, which must adhere to the Foundation's guidelines. Prior to submission, applicants are also advised to review the HOPE Grantee Readiness Checklist to ensure preparedness. While the Foundation accepts online submissions only, verbal or written inquiries do not substitute for formal applications. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and governmental bodies that directly serve the four designated Virginia counties. Proposals from individual schools or local government departments must be routed through their respective central administration or governmental offices. Projects must avoid duplication of existing services and must not request funding for ongoing operational costs, fundraising events, or debt reduction. Religious or political activities, corporate sponsorships, and for-profit initiatives are also excluded. The grant review process evaluates applications for mission alignment, completeness, and projected community impact. The Foundation retains discretion in funding decisions and may fully or partially fund proposals depending on availability and alignment with board priorities. Award decisions are typically communicated by the end of the month following submission. Successful applicants must later submit a final report and financial documentation through the Foundation’s grant portal, detailing fund usage and project outcomes. Photographs for use in Foundation publicity may also be requested. The Foundation maintains strict publicity guidelines requiring prior approval for any use of its name or logo in advertising.
