Teach STEM Classes in Nonpublic Schools Grant

The Teach STEM Classes in Nonpublic Schools Grant is administered by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) and is designed to expand access to qualified STEM instruction across the state. Created under P.L.2019, c.256 and amended in 2022, the program seeks to increase the availability of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in grades 3 through 12 within nonpublic schools by offering additional compensation to public school teachers who take on teaching roles in nonpublic settings. This initiative specifically targets current public school district teachers who hold valid certification in STEM subjects, are enrolled in or plan to enroll in related degree programs, or who already teach in STEM fields. The program allows these educators to teach outside their district obligations, during mutually agreed-upon hours. Teachers employed by charter schools, however, are not eligible. Eligible teachers are compensated through their public school districts at a rate calculated based on their annual salary, prorated hourly, and multiplied by 1.25 to account for preparation time. The NJDOE reimburses school districts accordingly, including appropriate payroll taxes. To participate, nonpublic schools must coordinate directly with eligible teachers and may request a list of interested candidates from NJDOE after January 15, 2026. Joint applications from multiple nonpublic schools are allowed if all students attend classes in a single location. Applications must be submitted electronically using a filled PDF by 5:00 p.m. on March 17, 2026. Paper or faxed submissions are not accepted. Applications will be reviewed for completeness, adherence to criteria, and overall quality. The NJDOE aims to fund at least three schools in each of the state’s three regions, resources permitting. Successful applications will detail the course structure, class schedule, and student impact. Each teacher’s compensation is based on total teaching hours provided during the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Reporting is required at year-end from participating nonpublic schools, including class schedules, challenges, and outcomes. Teachers qualifying under options 2 or 3 must also submit proof of enrollment in a STEM-related academic program, and those qualifying under option 4 must provide teaching schedules or certification evidence. Grant recipients are notified by June 30, 2026. Classes must not interfere with the teacher’s district responsibilities, and nonpublic school meetings or events cannot override those obligations. School district superintendents must be notified simultaneously with application submission and may raise objections under narrow criteria, including conflicts with teacher responsibilities or significant instructional impact. The program reinforces the state’s goal to foster STEM education equity and build a strong workforce pipeline through targeted, supplemental instruction in under-resourced educational settings.
