Children’s Mental Health Innovation Awards
This grant provides funding to U.S.-based nonprofits focused on innovative projects that improve mental health services for children and young adults, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Morgan Stanley Alliance for Children’s Mental Health Innovation Awards is a private philanthropic initiative established by Morgan Stanley to address the growing challenges associated with mental health among children and young adults in the United States. The program is designed to close funding gaps in the children’s mental health sector by identifying and supporting innovative nonprofit organizations that are developing impactful solutions. Through seed funding, visibility, and capacity-building opportunities, the initiative aims to accelerate promising ideas and connect them with additional sources of capital while strengthening the broader ecosystem of youth mental health services. The primary objective of the program is to fund new or piloted projects that directly address mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, depression, and other related conditions affecting children and young adults. The program emphasizes solutions that target unmet needs, particularly among disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. Eligible project approaches may include public education efforts, stigma reduction campaigns, improved access to care, early identification and prevention strategies, intervention models, peer support systems, and initiatives that enhance social connection. Projects may be implemented at local, regional, or national levels, with preference for those that demonstrate scalability or replicability across broader communities. Funding is distributed through two distinct award categories. The main Innovation Awards provide grants of 100000 dollars to selected nonprofit organizations, while the Next Gen Innovation Awards provide grants ranging from 25000 to 50000 dollars to organizations led by individuals under the age of 32 who have been operating for more than two years. The total funding pool for the program is up to 550000 dollars. All funding is provided on a one time basis and must be used directly for the proposed project. The program explicitly states that funds cannot be used to cover general institutional overhead costs that are not directly tied to the project implementation. Eligibility for the program is limited to United States based 501 c 3 public charities with annual total revenue under 5000000 dollars. Organizations exceeding this revenue threshold are not eligible. For the Next Gen category, additional requirements include leadership by an individual under 32 years old and a minimum of two years of operational history. International organizations are not eligible. Organizations may submit only one application per cycle, though previous applicants are permitted to reapply with new or enhanced proposals. The application process requires submission through an online platform during the open application window. For the 2027 cycle, applications open on June 8 2026 and close on July 24 2026 at 1159 pm Eastern Time. A briefing webinar is scheduled during the application period to provide additional guidance. Applications are evaluated by a panel of experts in mental health and grantmaking based on four equally weighted criteria: innovation, expertise, impact, and potential for scalability. Applicants may be asked to provide additional information during the review process, and all funding decisions are final. In addition to financial support, selected winners benefit from increased recognition through Morgan Stanley’s communications channels, as well as opportunities for networking and leadership development. A subset of applicants may also be invited to participate in the Leadership Learning Series, which provides training on topics such as funding strategy, impact measurement, and organizational growth. While participation in this series does not include grant funding, it offers valuable in kind support. Applicants will be notified of their status and award decisions in the spring or summer of 2027. For further inquiries, applicants may contact the program via the designated email address or technical support channel provided in the application materials.
