Eco-Impact Grants

Ecomaine's eco-Impact Grants provide project-specific funding to schools and educational organizations for sustainable waste management efforts involving students and educators. The program is designed for projects that are new or expanding and that directly address waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, or other waste diversion strategies. Projects are expected to integrate educational participation rather than simply purchase a service or fund a stand-alone activity. The guidelines identify a total grant pool of $25,000 for the program, with individual organizations permitted to request up to $7,500. Eligible applicants must be a school or nonprofit organization serving students who live in an ecomaine community. The guidelines direct applicants to ecomaine.org for the complete list of qualifying communities but do not reproduce that list in the document. Previous eco-Impact Grant recipients may apply again if the proposed project is new and distinct from the previously funded work or substantially expands or builds on the prior project in a way that advances long-term sustainability. The grant is not intended to serve as continuous year-over-year support for the same project. Award funds are made to schools or nonprofit organizations and not to individuals. Projects must have a direct waste reduction or diversion component. Examples include launching school-wide composting programs, replacing disposable cafeteria ware with reusable products, expanding recycling infrastructure, and developing student-led recycling education tied to measurable waste-reduction activity. Projects that do not include waste reduction or diversion are ineligible, as are one-time events, awareness-only projects without measurable outcomes, and services that lack integrated educational efforts involving students. Examples of ineligible uses include gardening supplies without a composting or solid-waste diversion component, beautification or landscaping activities unrelated to measurable waste reduction, and a subscription for curbside compost collection when there is no student involvement or long-term sustainability plan. Funds awarded by ecomaine must be spent in accordance with the applicant's approved submission. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. ET on October 20, 2026, and late applications will not be considered. Applications must be submitted through ecomaine's online application form and must have approval from school or organizational leadership, such as a principal, superintendent, president, or executive director. Applicants attest to this approval in the application. Required information includes the primary project contact, school or organization information, ecomaine community, physical address, approving administrator, prior ecomaine grant history, total funding requested, and a detailed project budget. The narrative asks applicants to explain the problem or need, proposed activities and approximate timeline, project replication or sustainability, integration with curriculum or organizational work, student participation and expected learning, and how project success will be evaluated. The budget template is optional as a format, but a comparable level of detail is required. The application emphasizes active student participation, integration with education or organizational programming, sustainability, replication potential, and measurable outcomes. Applicants should describe how students will participate and what they are expected to learn, how the project will be sustained or replicated after the initial grant period, and how success will be evaluated. Organizations must also agree to progress reporting. The main eligibility section requires an in-person site visit and review by ecomaine staff in early spring 2027 and a written closing report. The Application Questions section describes a mid-year review in February or March 2027 and asks applicants to provide updates about personnel changes or other barriers to project completion as necessary. All applicants providing valid contact information are to be notified of the funding decision no later than December 1, 2026. Successful applicants must respond to the funding notification and return a signed grant agreement by December 10, 2026, to remain eligible for funds. Grant payments are structured as 80 percent upon signature of the initial grant agreement and the remaining 20 percent upon completion of the final project report. Initial funds are expected to become available in December. The document contains conflicting closing-report dates: the eligibility and notification sections state that the closing report is due no later than May 3, 2027, while the Application Questions section refers to May 1, 2027.
