The Underdown Family Foundation is a private philanthropic organization founded in 1993 by Joanne and Parks C. Underdown, Jr., with a mission to support charitable causes that enrich the community of Hickory, North Carolina. The Foundation’s establishment builds on the legacy of Parks C. Underdown, Sr., who founded Hickory Springs Manufacturing in 1944. Now led by the second and third generations of the Underdown family, the Foundation emphasizes values rooted in education, health and human services, and faith-based initiatives.
The Foundation aims to address community needs by funding nonprofit organizations, particularly those that directly benefit the residents of Hickory, North Carolina. While its primary geographic focus remains local, the Foundation occasionally extends support to regional and national efforts, especially those conducting research on significant diseases and causes. In all cases, the Foundation prioritizes projects and organizations that demonstrate a meaningful impact on the community and the individuals served.
Eligible applicants must be nonprofit organizations that qualify for tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Special consideration may be given to requests in the areas of education, religious or faith-based work, and health and human services. The Foundation seeks to support proposals that maximize service delivery and outcomes for the Hickory area.
Applications are accepted year-round, but to be considered for the annual grant cycle, they must be submitted by April 30. Submissions received by that date are reviewed during the Foundation's summer grant meeting. Applicants will receive an automated email upon submission. Notification of funding decisions generally occurs by fall.
Grantees may be asked to submit periodic progress reports and final reports, depending on the nature and scope of the funded project. These reports help ensure accountability and transparency and allow the Foundation to evaluate the impact of its giving. For additional support or questions about the application process, applicants can contact the Foundation’s administrative partner through the provided phone line or email.
