The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced a forecasted funding opportunity under the Global Health Security Agenda to strengthen sub-national International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005) capacities in Nigeria, with a focus on implementing public health systems at the local level. The opportunity, identified as CDC-RFA-JG-25-0147, aims to foster collaboration with the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) to bolster the agency’s ability to manage, coordinate, and implement public health initiatives effectively across Nigeria. The CDC’s Global Health Center will provide funding through a cooperative agreement that is anticipated to begin on September 30, 2025. A total program funding amount of $25 million is expected, with an estimated two awards to be given.
This initiative supports NCDC's mission to develop and sustain resilient public health systems and effective workforce management capabilities. The timing aligns with the recent completion of NCDC’s second Joint External Evaluation (JEE) in August 2023, which indicated substantial progress since its initial 2017 evaluation. Technical assistance from selected implementing partners will focus on critical areas such as emergency preparedness, surveillance, response, and workforce development to enhance the NCDC’s capacity at the sub-national level.
Eligible applicants for this funding include a broad range of entities, such as nonprofits (with or without 501(c)(3) status), for-profit organizations, educational institutions, Native American tribal entities, state and local governments, and various special district governments. No cost-sharing or matching funds are required for this grant, providing additional accessibility for organizations prepared to support public health improvements in collaboration with NCDC.
The official NOFO is anticipated to be posted on November 1, 2024, with the application deadline expected on January 1, 2025.
