Grant Description

The Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund is administered by the U.S. Department of State through the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, specifically the Public Diplomacy Section. This program is part of the Department’s broader public diplomacy efforts to strengthen relationships between the United States and global communities through alumni of U.S. government-funded exchange programs. The fund is implemented annually and is designed to leverage the expertise, networks, and leadership of exchange alumni to advance shared policy goals and foster collaboration between the United States and partner countries. The initiative is tied to broader diplomatic objectives, including the promotion of democratic values, freedom of expression, and international cooperation. The primary purpose of this funding opportunity is to support alumni-led projects that advance U.S. policy priorities while also benefiting local communities in South Africa. The program specifically emphasizes initiatives that celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, referred to as Freedom 250. Projects must align with policy goals such as strengthening democratic values, promoting freedom of speech, or enhancing economic and social resilience. The program encourages collaboration among alumni and requires that each project involve at least two individuals who have participated in U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs, with one designated as the team lead. Funding is provided through grants or fixed amount awards, with individual project budgets required to fall between 5000 and 35000 USD. While total program funding is not specified, up to three awards are anticipated. The period of performance is limited to 12 months, and projects are expected to begin within 45 days of funding approval. Allowable expenses include essential travel, venue rental, communications materials, reasonable equipment, and honoraria for trainers or speakers within specified limits. However, the program strictly prohibits funding for construction, direct social services, partisan political activities, fundraising, scholarships, and activities taking place in the United States. Eligibility is limited to alumni of U.S. government-funded exchange programs and alumni associations. Applications must include at least two alumni participants, and teams may include U.S. citizens provided that at least two members are non-U.S. citizen alumni. U.S. citizens may not serve as team leads. Organizations applying must comply with federal requirements such as obtaining a Unique Entity Identifier and maintaining registration in SAM.gov, although individuals are exempt from these registration requirements. Each organization may submit only one application, and multiple submissions from the same organization will result in disqualification. The application process requires submission of standardized forms, including a proposal form, budget form, and an online Google form. Supporting documents such as resumes of key personnel, letters of support, and proof of nonprofit status may also be required. Applications must be submitted both through the designated Google form and via email to the Public Diplomacy Section. The deadline for submission is May 8, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. South Africa Standard Time, and late submissions will not be considered. Questions regarding the application process must be submitted by May 1, 2026. Proposals are evaluated based on several criteria, including alignment with U.S. policy priorities, clarity and feasibility of the project plan, level of alumni involvement, community engagement, monitoring and evaluation strategy, and budget justification. Projects are expected to demonstrate measurable impact and sustainability. Applicants are typically notified of funding decisions within 120 days after the application deadline. Successful applicants must comply with post-award reporting requirements, including quarterly progress and financial reports, as well as final reports at the conclusion of the project period.
