Activate Trenton’s Downtown Grant Program
This program provides funding to nonprofit organizations for projects that enhance Trenton's downtown area through art, culture, civic engagement, and public space improvements.
The Capital City Redevelopment Corporation (CCRC), a state-affiliated entity dedicated to revitalizing the Capital District in Trenton, New Jersey, is administering the @Downtown Grant Program to stimulate economic and social activity in the downtown area. This program aligns with CCRC’s broader mission to improve the vitality and livability of the state's capital city through strategic investments and community-oriented initiatives. The @Downtown program offers up to $1.25 million in total funding, with individual grant awards ranging from $25,000 to $300,000. The funding supports projects led by 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that aim to enhance the public realm within the Capital District. Eligible project types include initiatives that uplift Trenton’s art and maker communities, attract visitors by showcasing the city’s historical and cultural assets, provide civic or social engagement opportunities, or improve pedestrian comfort and safety through placemaking enhancements such as lighting, seating, or pocket parks. All funded projects must be completed within three years of the grant agreement execution. Applicants must be nonprofit organizations with documented 501(c)(3) status. While partnerships with public, private, or other nonprofit entities are permitted, only the lead applicant organization will enter into a grant agreement with CCRC. If the proposed project involves physical alterations, applicants must demonstrate legal rights to undertake such work, either through ownership or landlord consent. Additionally, any construction-related activities must comply with New Jersey’s prevailing wage requirements and applicants must meet state-level good standing and registration compliance. The application process is competitive, and proposals will be evaluated based on criteria including alignment with program goals, organizational and personnel experience, anticipated project impact and durability, and the feasibility of proposed use of funds. A minimum score threshold of 75 points (out of 100) must be met for funding consideration. In cases where a full award cannot be granted due to limited funds, applicants may be invited to revise their project scope or demonstrate the capacity to cover any funding gap. Applications must be submitted via email by noon (EST) on February 6, 2026, in a single PDF file. Required components include detailed project narratives, organizational documentation, budget forecasts by calendar quarter, timeline to completion, proof of nonprofit status, and a current Business Tax Clearance Certificate. Applicants are encouraged to submit any questions regarding the program to CCRC@treas.nj.gov by January 15, 2025, with responses to be posted publicly on the program’s website. Awardees will receive 33% of their grant upfront, with remaining funds disbursed on a reimbursement basis upon submission of approved invoices. Regular reporting on project progress is required as a condition of grant funding.
