The NYU Abu Dhabi Humanities Research Fellowship for the Study of the Arab World offers a residential postdoctoral fellowship for the 2026–2027 academic year. Administered by New York University Abu Dhabi, this program invites early-career scholars to participate in a vibrant and interdisciplinary research environment. Scholars from all nationalities and backgrounds are encouraged to apply, provided they have completed their PhD between September 2021 and September 2026. The fellowship supports research on the Arab world, encompassing its literature, history, culture, and artistic traditions, as well as its diverse global connections.
The initiative especially welcomes proposals that intersect with existing research themes within NYUAD’s divisions of Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences. Selected fellows are expected to be active contributors to the intellectual community on campus. Responsibilities include presenting current research, attending peer presentations, participating in HRF seminars, and engaging in related academic events. Opportunities may also exist for informal mentoring of students and faculty in related fields and, upon request, teaching a course at NYUAD.
Fellows will commence their appointments on September 1, 2026. The application window opens December 1, 2025 and closes January 5, 2026. Applications must be submitted through Interfolio. Required materials include a curriculum vitae (maximum four pages), a project proposal (up to 1,250 words), an abstract of the doctoral dissertation (up to 250 words), and two letters of reference. At least one letter should comment on the candidate’s dissertation progress and must be submitted directly by the referees through Interfolio.
Up to two postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded, contingent on final budget approval. Fellowship benefits include workspace, access to NYUAD's extensive library resources, administrative support, housing, a fellowship stipend, research funding, and travel support to and from Abu Dhabi. Fellows may also host a small academic workshop during their tenure.
The fellowship selection process is competitive and overseen by a panel of expert reviewers and program leadership. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the program’s FAQ to better understand expectations and application procedures. The program requires that fellows comply with tax regulations in their home countries.
Review the FAQ before applying; recommendation letters must address dissertation progress and be submitted via Interfolio.
