Community Arts Grants
This funding opportunity supports nonprofit organizations in Monterey County that provide public arts and culture programs, with a focus on promoting equity, inclusion, and community engagement.
The Community Arts Grants, administered by the Arts Council for Monterey County (Arts4MC), provide essential funding for nonprofit organizations focused on delivering public arts and culture programming within Monterey County, California. These grants are designed to support public-facing art initiatives that contribute to the cultural enrichment of the county’s diverse communities. As part of Arts4MC’s broader mission to ensure equitable access to the arts across all demographics, these grants emphasize racial equity, community reach, and the support of the local creative ecosystem. The program is tailored for organizations that have been operating in the county for at least two years and are in good standing with the California Secretary of State. The purpose of the Community Arts Grants is to support the creation and presentation of high-quality artistic programming, increase the sustainability of local arts organizations, engage new and diverse audiences, and expand equitable access to cultural resources. Funding up to $7,500 is available to eligible arts-focused nonprofits that demonstrate artistic excellence, sound strategy, and a commitment to equity and accessibility. Projects that prioritize underserved communities, introduce innovative artistic practices, strengthen organizational capacity, or foster collaborative partnerships are of particular interest. Funding must be used during the designated grant period, which for the current cycle runs from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. The grant may not be used for capital expenditures, fundraising events or activities, or services not directly related to public arts programming. Ineligible applicants include government agencies, organizations that do not deliver arts programming, for-profit entities, and educational institutions unless they are solely providing fiscal sponsorship for a qualifying arts program. Organizations with total annual revenues of $3 million or more are also excluded from applying. Applications are submitted through the Arts4MC Grants Portal, and all materials must be received by 5:00 PM on Monday, April 13, 2026. The application process includes submission of financial documents, such as recent Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet statements, a current organizational budget, and a project-specific budget. Applicants are also required to submit up to three work samples or supporting documents that demonstrate artistic quality and community engagement. These may include images, brochures, audio/video links, or letters of support. All audio and video samples must be provided via publicly accessible URLs and must be limited to three-minute segments if they exceed that length. Applications will be evaluated by an independent panel representing Monterey County’s five supervisorial districts. Submissions will be scored across three key areas: Artistic Excellence and Relevance, Impact and Strategy, and Equity and Accessibility. Each of these components is equally weighted at 50 points, with evaluators scoring on a 1 to 4 scale based on how well the applicant meets each criterion. Notification of grant decisions is expected by May 1, 2026, and successful applicants must return signed grant agreements by May 5, 2026. A grantee reception is planned for May, though the specific date is to be determined. The Arts4MC emphasizes grantee responsibilities, including public recognition of the grantor in communications and social media, adherence to the stated performance period, and submission of required reports. Applicants must also have completed final reports from any prior Arts4MC grants. By investing in impactful and inclusive arts programs, Arts4MC aims to foster a thriving, diverse cultural landscape in Monterey County. These guidelines are reviewed annually by the Arts Council Grant Committee to ensure continued relevance and effectiveness.
