Music Production Grant

The Cafe Royal Cultural Foundation NYC Music Production Grant supports individual New York City artists working in all genres of music who are undertaking the production of an audio recording. The grant is intended to assist artists with the production stage of music projects rather than the writing or composition of new material. Production is defined to include recording, mixing, editing, and mastering. Awards are available for up to $20,000. The Foundation prefers that recording take place within New York City's five boroughs or at a location in proximity to New York City that has been discussed with and approved by the Foundation. Grant funds may support eligible pre-production, production, and post-production expenses. Approved costs include rehearsal musician fees, rehearsal studio expenses, cartage, equipment rental, hired musician fees, piano tuning, producer fees when the applicant is not the producer, recording and tracking, recording engineers, recording studio fees, song or composition editors, sound directors, sound engineers, mixers, and mastering. Artists may use Flux Studios at its independent artist rate, but use of Flux Studios is not required. Ineligible expenses include advertising, applicant artist fees, artwork, CD or vinyl manufacturing, composer fees, design, photography or video expenses, equipment purchases, food, insurance, marketing, parking, printing, promotion, public relations, publicity, social media, transportation, and travel. Applicants cannot pay themselves artist, producer, musician, or similar fees through the grant. Eligible applicants are individual artists in all genres of music. An applicant must be a current citizen or resident of the United States, currently reside in New York City, have lived in New York City for at least one year before applying, and plan to remain a resident through completion of the project. Applications cannot be submitted for a band or organization because the Foundation makes direct grants to individuals, and the individual grantee is responsible for payments to a band or organization. The compositions for the proposed recording must be completed by the application deadline. Grants do not support commissions to composers or costs associated with writing or composing new work. For an original composition, the applicant must originate the majority of the material being recorded. Completed recording projects are ineligible, as are fees for work performed outside a professional recording studio, including home-based facilities. Applicants may apply with the same project only twice, although they may apply in another cycle with a different project. The application requires up to five MP3 song example links that the Foundation's Selection and Executive Committees can download and review. Alternatively, an artist may provide a private Spotify or SoundCloud playlist containing no more than three songs. Links must be correct and must not be password protected; an application with incorrect or password-protected links will be declined without Selection Committee review. Applicants must also provide a short project description, a short artistic biography of the people involved, a budget not exceeding $20,000, and a list of costs explaining how grant funds will be used. If a previously awarded grantee is a member of the applicant's band or is a musician, producer, or engineer the applicant intends to hire, that person cannot receive additional grant funds. Applications are evaluated first by the Cafe Royal Cultural Foundation Selection Committee Judges. The judges review and score all applications, and the five highest-scoring applications advance to review by the Executive Committees. Evaluation considers the quality of the music, composition, lyrics, and arrangement; innovation or originality of the work; artistic quality and the performance of performers or musicians; the importance and cultural relevance of the project; and the applicant's promise of future achievement in music. The Summer 2026 cycle opened June 2, 2026 at 9:00 am EDT and closed August 3, 2026 at 9:00 am EDT after reaching its maximum of 40 submissions. The next listed cycle is Fall 2026, opening September 3, 2026 at 9:00 am EDT, closing November 2, 2026 at 9:00 am EDT, with grantees announced December 17, 2026. Additional scheduled cycles are Winter 2027, Spring 2027, and Summer 2027. For the Summer 2026 application, the release of the music or completed mastering date must be no sooner than November 1, 2026, which is 90 days after the application due date, and no later than September 22, 2027, which is 12 months after the grant award date. The recurring schedule and the statement that the next round opens soon indicate that applicants who missed the Summer 2026 cycle can prepare for the Fall 2026 application window.

Submit correct, accessible, non-password-protected music links because inaccessible links cause an application to be declined without Selection Committee review. Keep the budget at or below $20,000 and include only approved costs. Demonstrate quality in the music, composition, lyrics, arrangement, performance, innovation or originality, cultural relevance, and promise of future achievement. Ensure compositions are complete by the deadline and plan the recording and release timeline within the funder's stated requirements.
