Grant Description

The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation is the philanthropic foundation through which Dominion Energy supports community causes in areas where its customers and employees live and work. Dominion Energy reported investing $40.3 million in the communities it served in 2025, including $13.6 million through the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation and its employee giving program. Foundation grants are organized around four focus areas: basic human needs, community vitality, education, and environmental stewardship. Eligible organizations may work in areas including education, environment, culture and the arts, civic and community development, and health and human services. Foundation grants are limited to organizations recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Applicants must also be located within geographic areas where Dominion Energy provides electricity or natural gas service or maintains significant facilities or business interests. Eligible areas include Virginia and South Carolina; northeastern North Carolina, where Dominion Energy remains the electric service provider; Hartford, Windham, Tolland, Middlesex, and New London Counties in Connecticut; Kent and Washington Counties in Rhode Island; and Grant and Tucker Counties in West Virginia. Following Enbridge's acquisitions of certain Dominion Energy utilities in 2024, the Foundation no longer makes grants in the former Dominion Energy Ohio, Utah/Wyoming/Idaho, or North Carolina Gas service areas. The Foundation supports both programmatic requests and operational costs and states that it seeks flexibility to strengthen organizational capacity while advancing program development and implementation. Most grant awards range from $1,000 to $15,000, although higher amounts may be awarded when a program is an exceptional fit. Awards may provide partial rather than full funding of the amount requested, and applicants are encouraged to structure requests so that partial funding can still be used effectively. The Foundation does not provide support that creates tangible benefits for Dominion Energy, including event tickets, exhibitor space, or utility payments. It also excludes individuals, religious programs of churches or sectarian organizations, fraternal, political, advocacy or labor organizations, advertising for benefit or courtesy purposes, memorial campaigns, organizations without 501(c)(3) status including organizations using fiscal sponsors, and organizations that limit membership or services based on specified protected characteristics. Applications are accepted online during two grant cycles each year. Before beginning an application, an organization must have a completed Benevity cause profile and a current Self-Certification Declaration. An expired declaration must be renewed because an organization cannot apply until the required Benevity responses are completed. For 2026, the first cycle opened January 12 and closed February 20, with decisions expected in May. The second cycle opened August 3 and closes September 11, with decisions expected in November. All applicants are notified of the decision at the end of the applicable cycle, and grant funds are processed during the month following award notification. Payments in 2026 are issued through Benevity, and organizations are encouraged to register for electronic funds transfer. Benevity charges a fee for check disbursements, which is deducted from the grant award. The Foundation hosts virtual information sessions during each grant cycle to answer nonprofit organizations' questions about the grant process, timeline, application, and Benevity platform. The source lists sessions associated with the current cycle, but participation is not identified as a required pre-application step. The application saves progress automatically as long as the applicant does not clear browser cookies or cache. Applicants that do not have an audited financial statement may submit their most recent available financial statement, including internally generated documents such as a Statement of Financial Position, profit and loss report, or QuickBooks statement; bank statements and Form 990 should not be submitted. New nonprofit organizations are eligible and use the same application without additional information, although Benevity registration may take longer when newly granted 501(c)(3) status has not yet appeared in the IRS database. Formal impact reports are not required for most Foundation grants, although the Foundation welcomes voluntary updates about program progress and impact. The source does not provide formal scored evaluation criteria, a defined performance period, a required matching or cost-sharing contribution, or a named program contact with a direct email address or telephone number. Applicants needing Foundation assistance are directed to an online contact form, while organizations experiencing Benevity registration issues are directed to submit a Benevity Help ticket. Because applications are explicitly accepted during two cycles each year, the opportunity is recurring. As of August 11, 2026, the August 3 through September 11 cycle is open and accepting applications, with award decisions expected in November and grant funds expected to be processed the following month.

Expert Tips

Complete the Benevity cause profile and Self-Certification before beginning because an organization cannot apply until these requirements are complete. Request the level of support that aligns with the organization's specific needs and structure the request so partial funding can be used because the Foundation does not take an all-or-nothing approach. Register for electronic funds transfer to support timely disbursement and avoid check fees.
