The Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services is a special fund administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. Created in 2010 by Birmingham philanthropist Ken Jackson in memory of his late dog Remy, the fund reflects a deep commitment to improving the lives of traditional companion animals—specifically dogs, cats, and horses—and supporting the humans who care for them. The fund awarded its first grants in 2011 and, to date, has distributed nearly $740,000 to eligible nonprofit organizations.
The Remy Fund supports nonprofit entities that serve companion animals in five counties in Alabama: Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, and Walker. Grants are made for both general operating support and for targeted projects that have clearly defined goals and objectives. However, capital projects are explicitly ineligible. Funded initiatives typically include rescue, shelter, and adoption programs; spay and neuter services; animal-assisted therapy involving companion animals; and educational or advocacy programs promoting the humane treatment of these animals.
The grant review process is managed by the Remy Fund Grant Committee, composed of local professionals and animal advocates, with Ken Jackson serving as an ex officio member. Committee members conduct comprehensive reviews of each application, which include both in-person and virtual site visits, ensuring a thorough understanding of each organization’s mission and impact.
Applications for the next grant cycle will open on Monday, March 16, 2026, and close on Thursday, April 30, 2026. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their proposals during this window. Grants are awarded on an annual basis, and the fund is recurring.
