Beazley Foundation Grants

The Beazley Foundation, established in 1948 by Fred W. Beazley, is a private philanthropic organization rooted in Portsmouth, Virginia. From its inception, the foundation has focused on supporting community-oriented initiatives, especially those serving youth. Though its original focus was on the City of Portsmouth, its geographic reach has since expanded to encompass the broader South Hampton Roads area and, on rare occasions, beyond. The foundation is fully self-funded and does not accept outside financial contributions. The foundation’s grantmaking centers primarily on educational initiatives, but it also supports other charitable and religious (parochial school) activities. Only organizations with tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code are eligible to apply. The foundation has clear restrictions: it does not support media projects, international or national programs, environmental or arts initiatives unless they are strictly educational, general needs of religious institutions, or applications from organizations without a prior funding relationship with the foundation—except in exceptional cases at the Board's sole discretion. All proposals must be preceded by a consultation with the President of the Foundation or their designee. Applications not meeting this requirement will not be reviewed. The foundation conducts quarterly reviews of grant applications, with Board of Trustees meetings scheduled in February, April, August, and November. Submissions are to be directed to the foundation’s office at 3720 Brighton Street, Portsmouth, Virginia. The submission deadlines for 2024 are January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. Should a deadline fall on a weekend or holiday, the submission must be made on the prior working day. The foundation does not consider unsolicited applications from individuals and emphasizes adherence to its application format and policies. Application materials not conforming to the stated requirements will be disqualified without review. The foundation encourages applicants to call in advance to confirm submission deadlines and avoid holiday-related disruptions. Successful applicants will be notified following the relevant Board meeting. While grant award sizes are not specified, the foundation maintains a discretionary process for evaluating proposals. The frequency of submission opportunities indicates a quarterly recurring cycle, and prospective applicants are advised to engage early with the foundation for timely consideration.
