Grant Description

The Impact Grants program is administered by the Capital Region Community Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in communities across Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham Counties in Michigan. The foundation focuses on supporting nonprofit organizations that drive meaningful, long-term community change. Through its competitive grantmaking process, the foundation prioritizes initiatives that go beyond short-term relief and instead foster sustainable, transformative outcomes. Impact Grants represent one of the foundation’s primary funding mechanisms for large-scale, strategic investments in the region. The purpose of the Impact Grants program is to support projects that significantly enhance the long-term effectiveness, reach, or collaborative capacity of nonprofit organizations. The program emphasizes transformative change rather than routine operational support. Eligible projects must demonstrate the ability to either increase long-term organizational impact, expand services to underserved populations, or foster meaningful collaboration between multiple nonprofit entities. The foundation explicitly discourages funding for ongoing operational costs such as rent, administrative expenses, or routine program delivery, instead favoring capital improvements, program expansion into new populations, or collaborative initiatives addressing critical community needs. Funding through the Impact Grants program is restricted to specific uses aligned with its strategic goals. Grants cannot be used for individual support, international organizations, sectarian or religious programming, endowment creation, or repayment of existing debts or obligations incurred prior to grant approval. Additionally, event sponsorships are not part of the open application process and are only available by invitation. The program requires a dollar-for-dollar cash match, meaning applicants must secure matching funds equal to the grant amount before funds are released, although these matching funds do not need to be in place at the time of application submission. Eligibility for Impact Grants is limited primarily to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and other eligible entities that serve residents within the specified three-county region. Organizations must demonstrate that their work predominantly benefits these communities. Statewide or national organizations may be deemed ineligible if their local presence does not sufficiently align with the foundation’s geographic priorities. Additionally, organizations that have received an Impact Grant in the previous funding cycle are not eligible to apply in consecutive years, reinforcing the program’s intent to distribute resources broadly across the nonprofit ecosystem. The application process consists of two stages: a Preliminary Application followed by a Full Application, which is by invitation only. The preliminary phase requires submission of key financial documents, including statements of revenue and expenses for the past two fiscal years, a current operating budget, and a balance sheet. Optional supporting materials may also be included to provide additional context about the organization’s work. Selected applicants are invited to submit a more comprehensive final application, which includes additional documentation such as board rosters, project budgets, letters of support, and potentially visual materials or promotional links related to the project. The 2026 application timeline begins with the preliminary application window opening on April 13 and closing on May 13 at 5:00 p.m. Applicants are notified of their status by mid-June. Invited organizations then submit final applications between June 22 and July 22, with funding decisions communicated by late September following committee review in early September. The foundation encourages early submission and offers pre-application consultations for first-time applicants, emphasizing the importance of preparation and alignment with program goals. This annual cycle reinforces the recurring nature of the program and allows organizations to plan strategically for future funding opportunities.
