Chi–Cal Rivers Fund

The Chi-Cal Rivers Fund is a competitive grant program administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The fund was established through a partnership of public and private organizations, including federal agencies, philanthropic foundations, and corporate partners, with the shared goal of strengthening ecological resilience in the Chicago and Calumet river systems. Projects must be located near or demonstrate direct benefits to the major waterways and tributaries within the Chicago and Calumet region. The program emphasizes projects that deliver measurable ecological outcomes, such as improved water quality, increased biodiversity, reduced runoff, and enhanced habitat resilience. Funding is intended for on-the-ground conservation activities and related planning, monitoring, and maintenance within the project period. Allowable uses include habitat restoration, installation of green infrastructure, invasive species management, and community engagement initiatives tied to environmental stewardship. Restrictions apply to activities such as political advocacy, litigation, and compliance with existing legal requirements. Additionally, applicants must adhere to federal compliance standards and restrictions on certain technologies and equipment procurement. Eligibility is limited to nonprofit organizations, government entities at the state, local, and tribal levels, and educational institutions. Federal agencies, individuals, and for-profit businesses are not eligible. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient organizational capacity and experience to execute the proposed project and maintain outcomes for at least five years following completion. Collaboration and partnership with community stakeholders are strongly encouraged and are considered a key factor in project success and sustainability. Applications must be submitted through the Easygrants online system. Applicants are required to register, complete the application within the system, and submit all required materials before the deadline. The application includes a detailed project narrative, budget, metrics, and supporting documentation such as monitoring and maintenance plans. Applicants are also encouraged to participate in informational webinars and workshops prior to submission to better understand program priorities and requirements. Proposals are evaluated based on conservation outcomes, technical merit, budget justification, and strategic value. Reviewers assess alignment with program goals, feasibility of implementation, cost-effectiveness, and the strength of partnerships and community engagement. Projects must include clear performance metrics and demonstrate long-term sustainability. Additional consideration is given to geographic distribution and funding availability. The application timeline includes optional informational webinars in June and July, with full proposals due in early August. Awards are typically announced in November, followed by a grant agreement development process lasting approximately four to six weeks. Projects generally span two years, with some categories allowing up to three years. Funding is primarily reimbursable, although advances may be granted under certain conditions.
