Special Project Grants Blue Cross and Blue Shield

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, a philanthropic entity committed to improving health outcomes across Louisiana, offers the Special Project Grants program to support nonprofit organizations in expanding or completing impactful projects. These grants are intended for projects that address health and community well-being across Louisiana, with a preference for innovative solutions and outreach to underserved or diverse populations. The Foundation seeks to reinforce the efforts of organizations with which it has a prior funding relationship, enhancing sustainability and community impact. Eligible applicants are exclusively 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations domiciled in Louisiana, registered in good standing with the Louisiana Secretary of State. The Foundation restricts funding to organizations that align with its mission and does not fund religious activities, political campaigns, athletic teams, parent-teacher associations, or capital projects. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to measurable results, clearly outlining deliverables and evaluation methods in their proposal. The funding amount for each grant is up to $100,000, with a performance period of one year. There is no matching fund requirement. Grants are disbursed in a single payment. Funds are generally not to be used for staff salaries unless the role can be sustained post-grant. The grant does support policy work, provided it is not the primary focus and avoids political activities. Successful projects are expected to show clear community benefit and reflect the Foundation’s core values. Applications are initiated through a Letter of Intent (LOI) submitted via the SmartSimple online portal. LOIs are reviewed after each quarterly deadline—March 1, June 1, September 1, and December 1. Selected applicants are then invited to submit a full proposal. The Foundation provides notification within three to seven weeks of application submission and offers general feedback on unsuccessful applications. Evaluation of proposals includes internal staff review and a panel of experts. Final decisions rest with the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Each grant recipient must provide an annual progress report, including data on program outcomes. The grant process is designed to be transparent and focused on fostering partnerships that yield measurable improvements in health and well-being for Louisiana residents.
