Wartime Veteran’s Survivors Grant Program

The program specifically targets spouses and children of qualifying Missouri veterans who died, were injured, or became significantly disabled as a result of combat action or combat-related illness occurring on or after September 11, 2001. Tuition coverage is calculated as the lesser of the actual tuition charged by the institution or the tuition rate at the University of Missouri Columbia for equivalent enrollment hours. In addition, recipients may receive up to 2000 dollars per semester for room and board and up to 500 dollars for books, based on actual costs. The total award amount therefore varies depending on institutional costs and student expenses. Funding is limited and subject to legislative constraints, including a statutory cap of 25 recipients per year. Eligibility requirements are detailed and must be met both at the time of application and throughout the award period. Applicants must be United States citizens or otherwise lawfully present, enrolled at least half-time as undergraduate students, and must be either the spouse or child of a qualifying veteran. Spouses must have been married to the veteran at the time of death or injury or within five years thereafter. Children must be under the age of 25 and must have been dependents of the veteran within the specified timeframe. Continued eligibility for renewal students requires maintaining a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and satisfactory academic progress. The application process is conducted through the State Financial Aid Portal, with both electronic and paper submission options available. Applicants must ensure that all required sections, including those completed by third parties such as financial aid offices, are properly submitted. Applications are ranked based on the date a complete application is received, emphasizing the importance of completeness and timeliness. Renewal applicants have a priority deadline of May 1, with supporting documentation due by June 1, while initial applicants are encouraged to apply early due to the limited number of awards. The program operates on an annual cycle aligned with the academic year, covering fall and spring semesters only. Payments are disbursed directly to institutions after eligibility verification, typically in mid-September for fall and early February for spring. If funding is insufficient to maintain maximum award levels, room and board allowances may be proportionally reduced for all recipients. Applicants who meet eligibility criteria but cannot be funded due to capacity limits are placed on a waiting list, reinforcing the competitive and limited nature of the program.
