Grant Description

The Live Music Society Toolbox Grant provides practical project support to small live music venues in the United States and its territories. The program is intended to help venue owners and managers address a one-time, specific, practical challenge that will improve the live music experience for performers, staff, and visitors. Unlike the funder's Music in Action grant, which focuses on broader audience development and community-building initiatives, the Toolbox Grant concentrates on smaller, essential improvements to venue operations and spaces. Examples include improvements that enhance safety and comfort, innovative technology that modernizes operations, consulting assistance for challenges involving acoustics, ticketing, fundraising, or branding, and staff training and education. These examples are not exhaustive, and venues may propose other practical projects that fit the program's purpose. Applicants may request up to $10,000 and are instructed to request only the amount actually needed to implement their proposed project. Requesting the maximum award does not increase the likelihood of selection. A detailed project budget is required to support the requested amount, and applicants must use the budget template supplied by Live Music Society. Grant proceeds must be fully utilized during the grant period from December 15, 2026 through June 30, 2027. The program does not support general operating expenses, capital campaigns, endowment funding, debt reduction, litigation expenses, or taxes due. Projects may either begin a new initiative or complete an existing project, provided the proposed work is feasible and can be completed within the grant period. Eligible venues must be located in the United States or its territories, and the grantee business entity must also be based in the United States or its territories. Venues must have a legal capacity between 50 and 300 people, including standing-room capacity, and must have been operating on or before January 1, 2023. Live music performed by solo artists or bands must be the venue's primary activity and business identity. The general eligibility requirements state that venues must present at least 30 music performances each year, while the FAQ also discusses evidence relating to show volume and states that venues customarily presenting 50 or more shows may qualify when substantiated by evidence of shows presented during the prior 12 months. The applicant must manage or own the venue. Promoters, curators, and festival producers are not independently eligible, although a talent buyer or promoter may participate in partnership with venue management and with the owner's or manager's consent. Payments can only be made to the venue's business entity. Ineligible applicants and proposals include 2025 Toolbox grantees and 2026 Music in Action grantee venues. Venues funded by Live Music Society from 2020 through 2024 may apply, and 2025 Music in Action grantees may also apply. Other exclusions include music presenters and promoters who do not own or manage the premises, venues located within larger performing arts centers with multiple stages and varied arts programming, second stages supported by larger-capacity venues, private member organizations not open to the public, bars and restaurants that are not primarily music-focused, and pop-up spaces that only occasionally host concerts. Activities supporting a religious purpose or requiring faith-based participation, discriminatory or exclusionary programs, political campaigns, and legislative advocacy are also ineligible. Applications begin with a short eligibility form and must ultimately be submitted through the Submittable platform; the sample application PDF is provided only as a preparation resource and cannot itself be used to apply. Applicants are required to submit an expense budget using the provided template, with the project budget uploaded in both Excel and PDF formats. Applicants must also provide proof of venue capacity and evidence of show volume for the prior 12 months. Examples of acceptable show documentation include ticketing-platform PDFs, a comprehensive booking calendar, and copies of artist settlements. Quotes or estimates may be included when relevant. Applicants selected as finalists will be required to provide detailed financial information, including recent tax returns and profit and loss statements. The EIN is used to confirm the applicant business entity and the state in which it is registered. Applications are evaluated on Plan and Impact and Feasibility. Under Plan and Impact, reviewers consider whether the project presents a clear vision for improving the live music experience for staff, musicians, and/or audiences. Under Feasibility, reviewers consider whether the applicant has a thoughtful project plan, a budget detailing the intended use of funds, and the ability to complete all proposed work during the grant period. Applicants should therefore clearly connect each requested expense to a practical venue need and demonstrate that the project can be completed between December 15, 2026 and June 30, 2027. Applications opened August 18, 2026 and close September 16, 2026. The Submittable portal accepts applications until 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, and applicants may save their work before submitting. Applicants who successfully click Submit will receive an email confirmation. The source states that all applicants will be notified of their status in November 2026, while the main timeline states that grantees will be announced in December 2026. The grant period begins December 15, 2026 and ends June 30, 2027. Questions concerning eligibility documentation or the application may be directed to grants@livemusicsociety.org. Live Music Society also lists its general contact email as info@livemusicsociety.org and its address as 441 West 53rd Street, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10019.
