County History Partnership Program

Funding is offered across three categories: General Operating Support for organizations whose primary mission is history or preservation; General Programming Support for ongoing public-facing historical programming; and Special Project Support for discrete, time-bound initiatives such as exhibitions, research projects, publications, or educational events. While there is no formal minimum or maximum request amount, awards are competitive and determined based on available funding, project quality, organizational capacity, and completeness of the application. Grant funds may be used for a range of allowable expenses including staffing, programming, collections care, research, exhibitions, and outreach, but may not be used for capital improvements, property acquisition, debt, or hospitality expenses. A key requirement of the program is a minimum 50 percent match, which may be fulfilled through cash contributions, in-kind support, or a combination of both. Matching funds must be directly related to the approved project and fully documented. This requirement ensures that applicants demonstrate financial commitment and capacity to successfully implement proposed activities. Grant funds are distributed in two installments, with an initial payment typically issued after agreement execution and a final payment contingent upon submission and approval of a comprehensive final report. The application process begins with a mandatory Letter of Intent, which must be approved before applicants are invited to submit a full application. Approved applicants receive access to an online system and may participate in optional workshops designed to guide them through requirements, documentation, and submission procedures. Applications are evaluated by an independent panel of experts using criteria that include historical significance, community impact, organizational capacity, and project feasibility. Final funding decisions are made by the administering division based on panel recommendations and available resources. The program follows a structured annual timeline, with Letters of Intent due in early September, full applications due in early October, and award notifications issued in December. Grant activities typically begin after funds are distributed in February and must be completed by the end of the calendar year. Final reports are required either within 30 days of project completion or by early January of the following year, depending on the funding category. The program recurs annually, providing ongoing opportunities for organizations to secure funding for historical initiatives.
