The Boyd & Evelyn Mullen Grant Program

The Boyd & Evelyn Mullen Foundation was established by Evelyn Mullen in memory of her and her husband Boyd’s deep commitment to community service in Pasadena, Texas. Though Evelyn dreamed of pursuing a nursing degree, her life instead became a legacy of advocacy for education and social betterment. The Foundation continues this legacy by supporting charitable organizations across Texas, with an emphasis on the Houston area. It is managed by Bank of America Private Bank, which administers multiple philanthropic foundations through its Texas office. The Foundation’s purpose is to improve the welfare of those in need by funding initiatives in education, human services, health, medical research, religion, literary studies, disaster relief, and science. Education is a central priority, particularly in helping underserved students gain access to and succeed in Texas-based higher education. Grants may support scholarship programs, academic readiness efforts for high school students, and college retention strategies. In the realm of literary studies, the Foundation backs academic fields such as history, classics, philosophy, and musicology, among others. Human services funding targets programs aiding the homeless, hungry, disabled, and survivors of abuse. The Foundation also responds to domestic disasters—including floods, hurricanes, and fires—by supporting relief and recovery efforts. Health-related funding is narrowly focused on medical research, especially in the field of nutrition. The Foundation also promotes scientific advancement through support for technology, environmental protection, and science education. Religious life is another area of focus, with the Foundation aiming to strengthen ethical and community engagement by funding interfaith and denominational initiatives in Houston. Grants are primarily awarded to support operational and program needs, although one-time capital improvement requests may be considered. The Foundation generally provides one-year awards ranging from $5,000 to $30,000. Occasionally, it may invite organizations to submit multi-year proposals. However, grants to individuals or endowment campaigns are not eligible. Organizations are limited to one application per 12-month period. Proposals must be submitted online by July 31 each year. Late applications are not accepted, and if the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, submission must be completed by the preceding business day. All applications are submitted through the Bank of America Philanthropic Solutions website, and applicants must follow the foundation-specific application process. Selected applicants will receive a decision within approximately three months. Funded organizations must complete a grant report within one year of award disbursement.
