The Untold Stories grant, launched by the Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation, is a new funding initiative aimed at elevating the narratives of historically underrepresented individuals in Coles County. This program is part of the Foundation’s broader commitment to racial equity and social justice and seeks to enrich the community’s understanding of its diverse histories through storytelling and educational initiatives. By focusing on these underrepresented narratives, the grant supports ongoing efforts to acknowledge and learn from marginalized voices within the region.
Eligible organizations for the Untold Stories grant include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, governmental units such as schools and municipalities, as well as churches, colleges, and groups with fiscal sponsorship from a nonprofit. The emphasis is on local organizations embedded in Coles County, with a preference for initiatives that actively engage the local citizenry. Projects must align with the grant’s objectives of preservation, education, and dissemination of stories that contribute to the broader dialogue around equity.
Grants are expected to average $5,000, with a total funding pool of $20,000. These funds may be used to document, share, and preserve stories, and promote reciprocal learning and community engagement. Collaborative projects that promote shared learning and amplify underrepresented voices are encouraged. However, due to funding limits, not all eligible applicants may receive awards, and award amounts may vary.
The application window opens on August 26, 2025, and closes on October 7, 2025. Applications can be submitted online, while those preferring paper applications are advised to contact Kristen Bertrand at 217-342-5413. Applications will be reviewed by a committee composed of community members, and some applicants may be invited to participate in interviews as part of the review process. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Award decisions will be announced by November 15, 2025, and funded projects may begin upon receipt of funds and must conclude by October 1, 2026. The grant is positioned as an annual opportunity, intended to provide recurring support for this critical work.
