2026 Public Art Building Communities Grant
This grant provides funding for artists and organizations to create public artworks that engage and enrich communities in Washington, D.C.
The Public Art Building Communities grant program is administered by the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities, an independent agency within the DC government responsible for promoting and supporting arts and humanities initiatives across the District. The agency is funded by the DC government and partially supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. Through this program, the agency aims to expand public access to art and strengthen community engagement by supporting the creation and installation of new public artworks throughout Washington, DC. The purpose of the program is to fund individual artists and organizations in designing, fabricating, and installing public art projects that are accessible to the public without cost and located in outdoor spaces. Eligible projects include both permanent installations, defined as lasting more than two years without a removal plan, and temporary installations, defined as lasting less than two years with a deinstallation plan. The program supports a wide range of artistic formats including sculptures, murals, mosaics, digital installations, and landscape-based artistic works, provided they are designed for public visibility and require minimal maintenance. Funding amounts vary by applicant type, with individuals eligible for awards up to 75000 dollars, nonprofit organizations up to 125000 dollars, and Business Improvement Districts up to 150000 dollars. Grant funds must be used during the District’s fiscal year, from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027. Allowable costs include artist fees, fabrication and installation expenses, materials, insurance, permits, and project-related transportation. Certain expenses such as capital expenditures, food, fundraising, and previously completed artworks are not eligible for funding. Eligibility requirements differ by applicant type. Individual applicants must be DC residents for at least one year, be over 18 years old, and maintain compliance with tax and grant obligations. Organizations must be registered nonprofit entities or recognized Business Improvement Districts operating primarily within DC and must partner with a visual artist. All applicants must demonstrate community engagement, obtain local Advisory Neighborhood Commission approval, and collect community support signatures. Additional requirements include obtaining permits or verification letters from relevant DC agencies and submitting extensive documentation such as project renderings, budgets, and work samples. Applications must be submitted through the Submittable online portal by July 27, 2026 at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. The submission process includes completing application forms, uploading required documents, and ensuring compliance with all guidelines. Applications are reviewed by an independent panel based on criteria including artistic merit, project feasibility, community engagement, and overall impact. Applicants are notified of funding decisions around October 13, 2026. Successful applicants must adhere to reporting requirements, including submitting interim and final reports documenting project progress and expenditures. Additional requirements include maintenance reporting and compliance with all grant conditions. The program is competitive and may issue multiple awards, depending on available funding. Technical assistance and workshops are available to support applicants throughout the process, and a designated program coordinator serves as the primary contact for inquiries and guidance.
