Advancement of Music Grants

The Presser Foundation is a private philanthropic organization dedicated to supporting music and music education initiatives, primarily within the Greater Philadelphia region. Through its Advancement of Music grant program, the Foundation provides general operating support to nonprofit organizations that teach, perform, and present music. The program reflects the Foundation’s belief that music fosters connection, well-being, and joy, and aims to sustain organizations that contribute to diverse musical experiences across communities. Oversight of this funding area is managed by the Committee for the Advancement of Music, which evaluates applications and determines award allocations. The primary purpose of the Advancement of Music grant is to provide flexible, unrestricted funding that allows organizations to maintain and expand their missions. Unlike project-based grants, these funds can be used for general operating expenses, enabling organizations to address evolving needs and strengthen their infrastructure. The Foundation supports a wide range of musical traditions, genres, and styles, and places particular emphasis on organizations that expand access to music and music education. This includes efforts to reduce barriers to participation and deepen community engagement through inclusive programming. Grant awards typically do not exceed 50000 dollars and are most commonly issued as single-year grants. However, the Foundation may offer a limited number of multi-year awards by invitation only. Award amounts are determined based on several factors, including the size of the applicant organization’s budget and its alignment with the Foundation’s priorities. In recent funding cycles, the Advancement of Music program has represented a significant portion of the Foundation’s grantmaking, with 40 percent of distributed funds allocated to this area in the 2025-26 cycle. Eligibility for the program is restricted to nonprofit organizations with 501c3 status that are primarily focused on music education, performance, or presentation. Applicants must demonstrate that the majority of their expenses support music programming. Additional eligibility requirements include having an operating budget of at least 20000 dollars or a minimum of five years of organizational history, and at least one full year of documented financial information as a nonprofit or fiscally sponsored entity. Performing and presenting organizations must also offer at least three public programs annually. The program is geographically limited to organizations based in and serving residents within specified counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The application process requires submission of a general operating support application through the Advancement of Music program. For the 2026-27 fiscal year, this process has been consolidated with the Special Projects program into a single application pathway. Applications are due annually on November 15, and applicants are evaluated based on three primary criteria: Organizational Strength, Music Programming, and Music Access. These criteria assess the organization’s operational stability, quality and consistency of programming, and commitment to expanding access to music. Following submission, applications are reviewed by the Committee for the Advancement of Music. Funding decisions are announced by March 1, and grant payments are distributed by the end of March. Recipients are generally required to submit a year-end report detailing the use of funds and organizational outcomes. First-time grantees may also be asked to participate in a site visit or virtual check-in as part of the Foundation’s due diligence and relationship-building efforts.
