Massachusetts Manufacturing Innovation Initiative (M2I2)

The Massachusetts Manufacturing Innovation Initiative (M2I2) provides state grant funding to help Massachusetts innovators begin manufacturing hard-tech products. It supports technical projects that advance physical products toward pilot-scale manufacturing across sectors such as electronics, bioindustrial manufacturing, robotics, and additive manufacturing, and it is intended for organizations with technologies at Technology Readiness Levels 4 through 6. Funding is provided on a reimbursement basis for capital equipment and related capital costs that will remain in Massachusetts. Land acquisition, new building construction, staff salaries, and software-only products are not eligible. Projects also must include a community benefit component for Massachusetts residents beyond the applicant organization. Applicants must have or plan to have operations in Massachusetts. Eligible lead applicants include Massachusetts institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations, and public or quasi-public entities, while private-sector applicants may participate through a required partnership with one of those Massachusetts entities, which serves as the contracting entity for awards to private companies.
