Early Career Research Grant

The Early Career Research Grant is administered by the Mathematics Education Trust in collaboration with the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators and supported by the Eugene P. and Clara M. Smith Mathematics Education Research Fund. This grant is designed to support the advancement of research in mathematics education by early career scholars and doctoral candidates. The program reflects a commitment to strengthening the field of mathematics education by fostering innovative research that bridges theory and classroom practice. The funding organization prioritizes projects that contribute meaningful insights into teaching and learning mathematics across various educational contexts. The primary purpose of this grant is to provide financial support for early career mathematics educators and doctoral candidates who are initiating new research projects or advancing dissertation-related work. The scope of supported research is broad and includes topics such as mathematics teaching and learning at all levels, preservice teacher education, the integration of technology in mathematics instruction, and innovative approaches to assessment and program evaluation. The grant encourages projects that demonstrate a clear connection between research findings and practical application in educational settings. Funding is available up to a maximum of 10000 dollars for a project period of one academic year. Funds may be used for reasonable project-related expenses, including stipends for supporting researchers and collaborating teachers, as well as costs associated with data collection and dissemination. However, certain restrictions apply, including the prohibition of indirect costs, tuition payments, and salaries for doctoral students. Conference attendance expenses are capped at 1500 dollars and reimbursed only upon submission of receipts. Any equipment purchased must directly support the research and cannot be the primary focus of the proposal. Eligibility is limited to individuals who meet specific criteria. Applicants must be either early career mathematics educators who have completed a doctoral degree within the past five years and hold no higher rank than assistant professor, or doctoral students in mathematics education who have advanced to candidacy with committee approval. Applicants must also be current members of both the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. Previous recipients of this grant are not eligible to reapply, and individuals may not receive more than one award from the Mathematics Education Trust within the same academic year. The application process requires submission of a comprehensive proposal that includes a detailed research plan, methodology, anticipated outcomes, and a timeline for completion. The proposal must not exceed five pages and should address research design, data collection and analysis methods, and the expected impact on mathematics education. Additional required components include a detailed budget, a background and experience section, and two letters of support. Applicants must also comply with institutional requirements such as obtaining IRB approval if human subjects are involved, and doctoral students must provide evidence of dissertation proposal approval prior to receiving funds. Applications are due by September 15, and award notifications are expected by early February. The grant is awarded for one academic year, with the possibility of a one-year extension upon submission of an interim report. Final reporting requirements include a two-page summary of the research, an itemized expense report, and a draft manuscript intended for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. The program is offered on a recurring annual basis, and applicants are encouraged to align their proposals with the priorities and initiatives of the supporting organizations.
