Administration of Justice Grants Program
This funding opportunity supports innovative projects that educate Michigan residents about their legal rights, enhance conflict resolution, and provide civil legal aid to underserved communities.
The Michigan State Bar Foundation (MSBF) administers the Administration of Justice (AOJ) Grants Program, which supports innovative projects aimed at enhancing public understanding of the legal system and expanding access to justice in Michigan. As a nonprofit philanthropic entity, MSBF directs its funding priorities toward educational initiatives for both children and adults that clarify legal rights, responsibilities, and the workings of the American justice system. A key objective of this program is to promote conflict resolution and support civil legal aid for the underserved. While the primary focus remains on legal education and access, the Foundation remains open to projects of extraordinary merit that contribute broadly to the administration of justice. MSBF strongly favors proposals that demonstrate innovation, statewide impact, and long-term viability. Ideal applicants present collaborative models with evidence of community support and connections to similar initiatives. Programs that can avoid duplicating existing services, offer replicable methods across regions, include robust evaluation mechanisms, and leverage volunteer engagement are particularly encouraged. Furthermore, applicants are expected to show a track record of quality and fiscal responsibility. MSBF generally avoids funding projects that are religious or political in nature or those that would threaten its tax-exempt status. Individual applicants and endowment campaigns are typically not eligible, nor are proposals seeking general operating support beyond three years or those exceeding 10% in overhead costs. To apply, applicants must first request access to the online grant portal by emailing a brief project summary to grants@msbf.org at least one week before the submission deadline. Once access is granted, applicants may submit their proposals online by one of the four annual deadlines: October 10, 2025; February 6, 2026; May 8, 2026; and October 9, 2026. Applications must be complete and submitted through the designated portal. Grant recipients will be notified in writing of the funding decision, along with any specific conditions or reporting requirements. Grantees are expected to adhere to the approved budget and timeline, and must secure Foundation approval for any significant project changes. Reporting obligations include a final written report, with interim updates and replication outlines if requested. MSBF also mandates acknowledgment of its financial support in any project materials, and reserves the right to request additional information post-award. All questions regarding eligibility, application procedures, or the suitability of a proposed project may be directed to MSBF via email at msbf@msbf.org or by phone at (517) 346-6400 or (800) 968-6723. The Foundationโs offices are located in the Michael Franck Building at 306 Townsend Street, Lansing, MI. The program is recurring on a quarterly basis, with regular deadlines and consistent review procedures, positioning it as a reliable opportunity for Michigan-based legal service providers and educators.
