Grant Description

The Brown Foundation is a private philanthropic organization focused on strengthening communities within the Greater Houston area. The foundation prioritizes investments that contribute to a vibrant, resilient, and impactful local ecosystem, with particular emphasis on organizations that demonstrate measurable outcomes and the ability to serve communities at scale. Its grantmaking reflects a strategic commitment to supporting established nonprofit organizations that have moved beyond early startup stages and are positioned for growth or sustained impact. The foundation provides funding across a broad spectrum of programmatic needs, including program support, general operating support, and capital projects. Applicants are permitted to self-select the program area that best aligns with their mission and work when completing the application. Core areas of funding include education, arts and culture, civic assets, human services, and healthcare. While the foundation is open to new ideas, organizations that fall outside of these priority areas are less likely to advance through the review process. Eligibility for funding is restricted to organizations that qualify as tax-exempt charitable entities under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The foundation explicitly excludes certain nonprofit classifications, including 509(a)(3) Type III organizations and private operating foundations. In addition to federal tax status requirements, geographic eligibility is a significant consideration. The majority of grants are awarded to organizations operating within Harris County and the broader Greater Houston region, including surrounding counties such as Montgomery, Fort Bend, Brazoria, and Galveston. The application process is structured, beginning with a mandatory pre-application. This initial submission allows the foundation to assess organizational eligibility and alignment with its mission and priorities. Pre-applications are accepted during four defined annual cycles, each lasting one month. Applicants submitting outside of these windows are held until the next available cycle. Following submission, applicants can expect a status update within two to four weeks after the close of the cycle. Organizations that successfully pass the pre-application stage are invited to submit a full proposal. Instructions for accessing the foundation’s online system are provided upon invitation, and applicants are typically given approximately one month to complete and submit their proposal. During the proposal review phase, the foundation may request additional information, conduct site visits, or engage in follow-up discussions to better understand the organization’s impact and operations. Final funding decisions are communicated after the review process is complete. Successful applicants receive a formal grant agreement via electronic signature, and once executed, grant payments are typically processed within 30 days. The entire process, from pre-application submission to final decision, takes a minimum of three months. Organizations whose applications are declined may only reapply once per fiscal year, which runs from July 1 through June 30. While the foundation does not provide individualized feedback on declined applications, it encourages applicants to carefully review guidelines and align closely with stated priorities before applying.
