Youth Service Capacity-Building Grants Program
This program provides funding and support to small nonprofit organizations in New York City that serve youth aged 5 to 25, helping them strengthen their operations and improve their capacity to deliver essential services.
The Youth Service Capacity Building Grants program is administered by the William T Grant Foundation, a private philanthropic organization focused on improving outcomes for young people in the United States by supporting research and practice that reduces inequality. This grant program specifically targets nonprofit organizations in New York City and is designed to strengthen their internal capacity so they can deliver more effective services to youth. The program reflects the Foundation commitment to building stronger institutions that can sustainably address disparities in youth outcomes, particularly those related to socioeconomic, racial, and community based inequities. The primary purpose of the program is to support capacity building efforts within small nonprofit organizations that directly serve youth between the ages of five and twenty five. Rather than funding direct service expansion, the grant focuses on improving the organizational infrastructure that underpins service delivery. Eligible capacity building activities include financial management improvements, board development, human resource systems, staff training, fundraising strategy development, strategic planning, information technology upgrades, leadership development, communications, and evaluation systems. Applicants must demonstrate that the proposed capacity building work is grounded in a clear assessment of organizational needs and that it will result in improved service delivery outcomes over time. The program provides a total award of sixty thousand dollars distributed over a three year period. Funding is structured as thirty thousand dollars in the first year, twenty thousand in the second year, and ten thousand in the third year. In the final year, grantees are required to secure an additional ten thousand dollars in matching funds from external sources, encouraging organizations to build new funding partnerships. In addition to financial support, grantees receive technical assistance through a partnership with Community Resource Exchange, including individualized consulting and participation in peer learning communities to support implementation of capacity building plans. Eligibility is restricted to community based nonprofit organizations located in the five boroughs of New York City. Applicants must have direct programmatic contact with youth and must serve populations where at least eighty percent of participants fall within the eligible age range. Organizations must either operate in designated high risk community districts or provide targeted programming for Mexican descent or LGBTQ youth. Additional requirements include having a valid 501 c 3 tax exempt status or operating under a fiscal sponsor, maintaining an annual operating budget between two hundred fifty thousand and one million dollars, and providing audited or certified financial statements. Certain entities such as schools, national organizations, and programs serving adults are not eligible. The application process is conducted entirely through the Foundation online portal and requires submission of structured materials using designated templates. Applicants must provide background information about the organization, a detailed narrative describing current youth services, a clear rationale for the identified capacity building need, and a comprehensive three year implementation plan. Supporting documentation includes financial statements, organizational budgets, board member lists, and IRS documentation. The narrative components must address how the organization will assess progress, sustain improvements, and ensure long term impact. Applications are reviewed annually by a committee of Foundation staff with expertise in nonprofit management and related fields. Evaluation criteria focus on the clarity of the organization mission and services, the strength of the identified capacity challenges, and the quality and feasibility of the proposed capacity building plan. Reviewers also assess whether the organization has a realistic plan for sustaining improvements beyond the grant period. The application deadline for the current cycle is September seventeenth two thousand twenty six, with grants beginning March first two thousand twenty seven. The program is recurring on an annual basis, and organizations that have previously received funding must wait at least eighteen months after their grant period ends before reapplying.
