Dairy Industry Impact Grant

The Dairy Industry Impact Grant is administered by the Dairy Business Innovation Alliance, an initiative supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through its Agricultural Marketing Service. The program is designed to strengthen and advance the dairy sector across a defined Midwest region by supporting projects that generate broad industry benefits. The Alliance focuses on improving market access, encouraging innovation, and enhancing operational sustainability for dairy producers and processors. Funding is made available through a competitive application process and is intended to support initiatives that can positively influence the dairy industry as a whole rather than individual business gains alone. The primary purpose of this grant program is to fund projects that introduce innovation, expand market opportunities, or improve resource efficiency within the dairy sector. Eligible activities include export initiatives such as trade shows and international market development, adoption of energy efficient equipment, implementation of water conservation technologies, development of sustainable packaging, and innovations involving dairy by products or production processes. Projects must demonstrate a clear industry wide impact and align with the program’s emphasis on advancing dairy competitiveness and sustainability. Funding is provided in the form of reimbursement grants of up to one hundred thousand dollars. Awardees are required to incur eligible expenses and submit documentation such as invoices or proof of payment to receive reimbursement. Funds cannot be used retroactively for purchases made prior to the award. All reimbursements must be submitted within twelve months of the award date, establishing a defined performance period. Recipients must also comply with reporting requirements, including six month and twelve month surveys, and adhere to federal guidelines regarding the disposition of equipment purchased with grant funds, particularly for items exceeding ten thousand dollars in value. Eligibility is limited to for profit dairy farms and dairy processing or manufacturing businesses located within eleven specified states: Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Applicants must maintain a business address and manufacturing presence within this region and be in good standing with the Internal Revenue Service. Additional requirements include having an Employer Identification Number, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations, and avoiding conflicts of interest with affiliated organizations. Previous recipients may apply only if proposing a distinct project or new phase, and those with active grants that are less than fifty percent reimbursed are not eligible. The application process requires submission of detailed business and project information. Applicants must provide business data including food safety plan details, a comprehensive project summary, a work plan and timeline, a detailed budget with explanation, and a business plan. Vendor quotes are also required to substantiate proposed expenditures. Applications must be completed through the designated online portal, and applicants are encouraged to review guidance materials and consult program staff prior to submission to ensure alignment with program objectives. For the Fall cycle, the application period opens on August 3 and closes on September 30. Award notifications are expected in November. Applicants are encouraged to engage early, including reviewing instructional materials and contacting the program coordinator for guidance. While no formal pre application is required, consultation with program staff is strongly recommended to refine project proposals. The program operates on a recurring cycle, with future rounds anticipated annually, continuing its role in supporting innovation and growth within the regional dairy industry.
