Additional priority is given to projects that incorporate proven safety countermeasures or address high injury network locations. Final funding decisions are made following review by a selection committee and approval by the Commissioner of Transportation. The program operates on an annual cycle, with applications typically accepted between April and July and a submission deadline of July 1. Award announcements are made no later than November 30, and municipalities must execute project agreements shortly thereafter. Funded projects are required to award construction contracts within twenty four months of grant notification.
