Evelyn L. Pruitt Fellowship for Dissertation Research
This fellowship provides financial support for women pursuing doctoral research in geography or related fields, enabling them to conduct impactful dissertation research.
The Evelyn L. Pruitt Fellowship for Dissertation Research is administered by the Society of Woman Geographers, a professional organization dedicated to advancing geographic research and supporting women in the field. The fellowship was established through a bequest from Evelyn L. Pruitt, a research geographer with the United States Navy whose work significantly contributed to coastal geography, remote sensing applications, and international field research. The fellowship continues her legacy by providing financial support to emerging scholars conducting advanced geographic research. The purpose of this fellowship is to support women pursuing doctoral degrees in geography or closely related disciplines with a geographic focus. It is designed to fund dissertation research that demonstrates strong academic merit and has the potential to contribute meaningfully to the discipline. The program prioritizes high-quality scholarship and research that shows promise for advancing knowledge and professional impact within geographic fields. Funding is intended to support research-related activities during the academic year. Allowable expenses include travel, data collection, data analysis, and writing associated with dissertation research. The fellowship also allows for coverage of living expenses such as housing, food, and rent during the research period, whether the work takes place in the field, at a university, or remotely. However, the fellowship does not fund tuition, university fees, indirect costs, or participation in conferences and workshops. Eligibility is limited to women enrolled in Ph.D. programs in geography or geographically related fields at institutions in the United States. Applicants must be doctoral candidates and are encouraged to have completed their comprehensive examinations and secured approval for their dissertation research proposals. Preference is given to candidates who will be actively engaged in dissertation research during the 2026–2027 academic year. The selection process evaluates applicants based on the quality of their proposals, the significance and potential impact of their research, evidence of professional engagement, and financial need in later stages of review. The application process requires submission of a complete application packet that includes a cover sheet with applicant details, a letter of application describing the research and its significance, a dissertation research proposal, a detailed budget and budget narrative, a curriculum vitae, and an official transcript. In addition, applicants must arrange for two letters of support from dissertation committee members, which must address the importance of the research and confirm the status of proposal approval. All application materials must be compiled into a single PDF document and submitted via email, while letters of recommendation are submitted separately by referees. Applications must be submitted by April 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Applicants are notified of decisions in early June 2026. Awards are disbursed through the recipient’s university upon verification of enrollment and approval of the dissertation proposal for the funded academic year.
