Regenerative Farmer Network Grant
This funding initiative provides financial support to Michigan farmers to create networks that promote and implement sustainable agricultural practices, enhancing soil health and ecological stewardship.
The Regenerative Farmer Network Grant (RFNG) is an annual funding initiative administered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). Its primary aim is to catalyze the development of farmer-led networks committed to implementing regenerative agricultural practices throughout Michigan. This program serves as a strategic response to the increasing need for sustainable agriculture, emphasizing collaboration, peer-to-peer mentorship, and practical innovation. By supporting networks of farmers, MDARD fosters a community-driven approach that promotes ecological stewardship, improved soil health, and resilience in farming systems. The RFNG program is specifically designed to empower Michigan farmers to take the lead in adopting and advocating for regenerative practices. These include integrating livestock into cropping systems, minimizing soil disturbance, promoting biodiversity, maintaining continuous living roots, and keeping the soil covered. Successful applicants are expected to build networks consisting of at least five Michigan-based agricultural farmers and to partner formally with a recognized entity such as a conservation district, MSU Extension, or a nonprofit agricultural organization through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Funding under this program supports a diverse range of activities that align with the principles of regenerative agriculture. Eligible projects may involve the creation of new farmer networks, education and outreach initiatives, on-farm demonstrations, research, data collection, incentive payments for conservation practices, and marketing strategies to expand awareness and sales of regenerative products. Grant funds can also cover costs for administrative coordination, network meetings, workshops, and travel. However, certain expenditures such as equipment purchases, lobbying, and real estate costs are not permitted. Administrative expenses are capped at 25% of the total request. To qualify, applicants must contribute a 30% match—either cash or in-kind—based on the total amount of grant funds requested. MDARD provides clear guidelines and definitions for what constitutes eligible matching sources, and all match contributors must submit letters of commitment. Proposals must demonstrate the viability of the project, commitment of participating farmers, and alignment with MDARD’s regenerative agriculture goals. The program places strong emphasis on outreach to underserved regions and encourages projects that incorporate new or emerging regenerative techniques. Applications for the 2026 RFNG cycle will open on February 1, 2026 and close on February 27, 2026 at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. All applications must be submitted in Microsoft Word format via email to MDARD’s Regenerative Agriculture Program. The proposal must include a completed application form, budget with match documentation, MOU, and letters of commitment. Projects will be reviewed by a committee based on need, goals, outreach potential, and project feasibility, with preference given to new networks and projects that include a soil health assessment component. Awards will be distributed on a reimbursement basis beginning no earlier than April 1, 2026. All funded projects must be completed by November 30, 2026. Annual reports are due by February 15, 2027, and must include both qualitative and quantitative data as outlined in MDARD’s reporting guidelines. MDARD expects full compliance with applicable regulations and retains the right to use submitted materials for promotional or evaluative purposes. The program represents a key opportunity for Michigan farmers to enhance their sustainability practices while fostering community-led innovation.
