Artist Opportunity Grant Program

The Artist Opportunity Grant Program is administered by Culture Works and funded through the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District. This program is designed specifically to support individual artists residing in Montgomery County, Ohio, by providing financial assistance for career advancement opportunities. Funding for the grant cycle totals 75000 dollars, with individual awards ranging from 500 to 5000 dollars. Funds must be used exclusively for project-related expenses tied to a clearly defined opportunity occurring within the grant period of January 1, 2027 through December 31, 2027. Allowable expenses include materials, professional services, marketing and documentation, travel, and limited compensation for the artist’s time. Restrictions prohibit use for general business expenses, living costs, academic degree programs, or activities outside the defined project scope or timeline. Eligibility is limited to individual artists who are residents of Montgomery County, Ohio, are at least 18 years old, and are either United States citizens or permanent legal residents. Applicants must demonstrate active engagement in their artistic discipline, including having exhibited, performed, or published work within the past three years. The program defines an artist as someone with at least three years of practice who is committed to developing their craft and receiving compensation for their work. Only one application per cycle is permitted, and applicants must focus on a single opportunity. The application process requires submission through the Community Force online portal and includes several components such as proof of residency, an artist statement, work samples, a detailed project description, timeline, budget, and supporting documentation. Applicants may also need to provide letters of invitation or acceptance depending on the nature of the opportunity. A clear explanation of both the artistic and public impact of the project is required, along with a plan to share the results with the Montgomery County community. Applications are evaluated through a multi-stage review process beginning with an eligibility screening by Culture Works and MCACD staff. Qualified applications are then reviewed by an independent panel consisting of artists and arts professionals. The evaluation criteria include artistic merit, potential impact, quality of the proposed opportunity, administrative capability, and public benefit. Panelists score applications and participate in a public review discussion before final funding recommendations are made and approved. The application cycle opens on August 3, 2026 and closes on September 4, 2026 at 4:00 pm Eastern Time. Following submission, applications undergo eligibility review and panel evaluation through October, with public panel discussions in early November. Final funding decisions are made shortly thereafter, and grantees are onboarded between mid November and December. Grant payments begin in January 2027, and all funded projects must be completed by December 31, 2027. A final report is required within 30 days of project completion, and recipients must acknowledge funding support in all related materials.

Applicants are encouraged to write as if the reviewer knows nothing about their project. They should attend optional workshops on artist statements, budgets, and peer reviews to improve their application.
